English Version
After flooding Wei’s seven armies, Guan Yu stood at the peak of his military reputation. Across the empire, his name inspired both admiration and fear.
Yet beneath the glory, an old wound continued to trouble him.
The arrow fired by Pang De had left poison deep within his arm. The pain worsened each day until the famous physician Hua Tuo arrived at Guan Yu’s camp.
After examining the injury, Hua Tuo delivered troubling news.
The poison had reached the bone.
Only a dangerous operation could save the arm.
Without hesitation, Guan Yu accepted.
As Hua Tuo cut open the flesh and scraped poison directly from the bone, officers surrounding the tent could barely endure the horrifying sound. Many turned away in disbelief.
Guan Yu, however, remained perfectly composed.
He calmly played a game of Go, discussed military affairs with his officers, and laughed throughout the operation as though nothing unusual were happening.
When the treatment was finished, Hua Tuo could only admire the general’s extraordinary courage.
The legendary story of “scraping poison from the bone” would become one of the most famous episodes associated with Guan Yu.
While Shu celebrated its greatest hero, another plan was unfolding in the east.
Sun Quan had never abandoned his desire to recover Jing Province.
Learning that Guan Yu had taken most of his army north, he summoned Lü Meng to discuss a decisive campaign.
Lü Meng proposed an ingenious deception.
He publicly pretended to be seriously ill and withdrew from active command, allowing the young Lu Xun to replace him. Guan Yu received reports that Lü Meng could no longer fight and concluded that Eastern Wu no longer possessed a capable commander.
Lu Xun reinforced this illusion by sending humble letters praising Guan Yu’s unmatched achievements and expressing complete friendship between Shu and Wu.
Satisfied by these messages, Guan Yu concentrated even more troops at the northern front.
The trap had worked.
Hidden from public view, Lü Meng gathered elite soldiers aboard river vessels.
Every warrior wore ordinary white civilian clothing, disguising the fleet as harmless merchant boats travelling along the Yangtze River.
Shu’s watchtowers saw nothing suspicious.
No warning fires were lit.
Once the fleet approached the major cities of Jing Province, the disguise disappeared in an instant.
The white garments fell away.
Weapons emerged.
Wu’s soldiers stormed ashore with overwhelming speed.
Fortresses that had stood secure for years fell one after another before organized resistance could form.
Lü Meng then demonstrated remarkable discipline.
He strictly forbade looting, protected civilians, and ordered respectful treatment of the families of Shu’s soldiers.
His humane policies quickly won public support, weakening the willingness of many defenders to continue fighting.
Far away, Guan Yu remained focused on Fancheng.
Then urgent messengers finally arrived.
“Jing Province is under attack!”
The victorious general stood speechless.
At the very moment his fame had reached every corner of China, the foundation of Shu’s power in the south had already begun to collapse.
Lü Meng’s White-Clad Crossing would soon become one of the greatest strategic deceptions in military history—and the beginning of Guan Yu’s tragic final campaign.
