成語「一身兩任」意思與典故:一人肩負兩項重任 | The Meaning of “Yi Shen Liang Ren”: One Person Carrying Two Important Responsibilities

2026-07-04

「一身兩任」是中國成語,用來形容一個人同時肩負兩項重要職責或使命,需要兼顧不同工作與責任。它既可形容能力出眾,也反映肩負重任時所需的智慧、責任感與奉獻精神。
“Yi Shen Liang Ren” is a Chinese idiom describing someone who carries two major responsibilities at the same time. It highlights dedication, competence, and the ability to balance multiple important duties.

English Version
The idiom “Yi Shen Liang Ren” literally means “one person holding two responsibilities.” It refers to someone entrusted with two important roles at the same time because of ability, necessity, or special circumstances. Historically, the phrase often described government officials who simultaneously managed different offices or responsibilities. Such appointments reflected the ruler’s confidence in the official’s talent and integrity. Beyond official positions, the idiom has come to represent anyone balancing multiple significant duties in daily life. In modern society, many people experience this situation. A parent may also be a business leader, a teacher may serve as both an educator and an administrator, or an entrepreneur may need to oversee operations while developing new ideas. These individuals are often required to make careful decisions while meeting the expectations of different roles. “Yi Shen Liang Ren” therefore emphasizes not only capability but also responsibility, discipline, and effective time management. Carrying two important responsibilities is rarely easy, and success depends on wisdom, patience, and perseverance rather than talent alone. The idiom reminds us that people trusted with multiple duties should value both responsibilities equally and perform each with sincerity. It remains a meaningful expression in Chinese culture for recognizing those who dedicate themselves to serving others while balancing demanding obligations.

English Version
Long ago, a young official named Wenyuan earned a reputation for fairness, honesty, and compassion. When two neighboring counties unexpectedly lost their magistrates at the same time, the imperial court struggled to find suitable replacements. Trusting Wenyuan’s ability, the emperor appointed him to oversee both counties until new officials could be selected. Many believed the task was impossible. Every morning before sunrise, Wenyuan traveled between the two regions, settling disputes, inspecting farms, meeting local leaders, and reviewing official reports late into the night. Although exhausted, he refused to neglect either responsibility. Months later, harvests improved, crime declined, and both counties prospered. When inspectors arrived from the capital, they were impressed that one person had managed two demanding positions with such fairness and dedication. They praised Wenyuan as a true example of “Yi Shen Liang Ren.” Yet he answered modestly, “These duties are not honors but promises made to the people.” His humility inspired everyone around him. In later generations, his story became a symbol of responsibility and faithful service. People remembered that carrying two important roles requires not only talent but also commitment, integrity, and the willingness to place the needs of others above personal comfort.

結語
「一身兩任」象徵的不只是身兼數職,更代表一份值得信任的責任與使命。當一個人願意認真完成每一項工作,無論肩上的擔子有多重,都能以智慧與努力贏得他人的尊敬,這正是這個成語流傳至今的重要價值。

English Version
“Yi Shen Liang Ren” reminds us that true ability is measured by responsibility as much as talent. Those who faithfully fulfill multiple important roles earn respect through dedication, integrity, and unwavering commitment.
