Directed by Sunao Katabuchi and adapted from Fumiyo Kono’s acclaimed manga, In This Corner of the World is widely regarded as one of Japan’s finest animated films. Set during the final years of World War II, the story offers an intimate portrait of civilian life rather than military conflict, revealing how ordinary people struggled to preserve hope and dignity amid unimaginable hardship. The film follows Suzu Urano, a gentle and imaginative young woman raised in Hiroshima. At the age of eighteen, she marries into the Hojo family and moves to the naval city of Kure, where she begins a new chapter as a housewife. Her greatest challenges are not found on the battlefield but within the home, where severe shortages force her to invent creative ways to prepare meals, repair clothing, and care for her family. Through these quiet moments, the film celebrates the resilience and resourcefulness of everyday people whose lives are forever altered by war. As the conflict intensifies, Kure becomes a major military target, bringing relentless air raids, destruction, and heartbreaking loss closer to Suzu’s world. Friends disappear, loved ones are taken away, and familiar landscapes gradually vanish beneath the devastation. Yet despite overwhelming grief, Suzu refuses to surrender her compassion or optimism. Actress Non made her animation voice-acting debut as Suzu, delivering a heartfelt performance that perfectly captures the character’s warmth and quiet strength. Following its release, the film became a word-of-mouth phenomenon, remaining in Japan’s box office top ten for fifteen consecutive weeks. It won Best Animated Feature at the 40th Japan Academy Film Prize, topped the prestigious Kinema Junpo Best Ten list—the first animated film to do so since My Neighbor Totoro—and received the Jury Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
