September 11 in History|From Stirling Bridge and the Chilean Coup to 9/11

2026-09-11

September 11 carries memories of medieval battles, exploration, political upheaval and 9/11, making it one of history’s most consequential dates.

English Version

September 11 is one of the most historically layered dates on the calendar. Long before the events of 2001, the date was already associated with wars, exploration, state-building and political change. On September 11, 1297, Scottish forces led by William Wallace and Andrew Moray defeated an English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge during the First War of Scottish Independence. The English forces were larger, but the Scottish commanders took advantage of the narrow crossing and surrounding terrain. They allowed part of the English army to cross before launching their main attack, turning the bridge and river crossing into a major tactical advantage. The Scottish victory became one of the most celebrated moments of the independence struggle, and Wallace gradually developed into a powerful symbol of Scottish resistance and national identity.  More than three centuries later, on September 11, 1609, English navigator Henry Hudson sailed into the waters around Manhattan aboard the Half Moon. Hudson had been searching for a route to Asia, but instead of finding the passage he wanted, he gathered valuable geographical information about the North American coast. He travelled up the river that would later bear his name, opening the way for increased Dutch interest in the region. The Dutch subsequently established New Amsterdam, which eventually became New York after the English takeover. A voyage intended to discover a route to Asia therefore became part of the much larger story of European exploration, colonisation and the development of one of the world’s greatest cities.  On September 11, 1777, the American Revolutionary War produced another major event at the Battle of Brandywine. British forces under General William Howe and General Charles Cornwallis launched a large-scale attack against George Washington’s Continental Army near Brandywine Creek in Pennsylvania. The British victory forced Washington to retreat and opened the way toward Philadelphia. Although the American army lost the battle, it remained intact and continued fighting. The episode demonstrated an important feature of the Revolutionary War: battlefield defeats did not necessarily destroy the American cause, because Washington’s army could retreat, regroup and continue the struggle.  On September 11, 1789, the new American federal government took another important step in building its institutions. Alexander Hamilton was appointed the first Secretary of the Treasury. Hamilton played a central role in creating the financial foundations of the United States, including strengthening national credit, addressing public debt and developing a more coordinated federal financial system. His appointment illustrates an important truth about nation-building: political independence alone does not create a functioning state. Governments also require taxation, public finance, credit, economic administration and institutions capable of supporting the new political system. On September 11, 1814, the Battle of Plattsburgh reached its decisive stage during the War of 1812. American forces defeated British troops and naval forces near Lake Champlain in northern New York, preventing the British from gaining a major strategic advantage from Canada. The victory strengthened the American position during peace negotiations and helped prevent Britain from using military success in the region to demand major territorial concessions. The war ended with the Treaty of Ghent later that year, and Plattsburgh became one of the important American victories of the conflict. September 11, 1941, marked the beginning of construction of the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The United States was not yet formally at war, but the Second World War was rapidly expanding and the American military needed a more efficient way to coordinate its growing departments and personnel. The enormous five-sided building was designed as a central headquarters for the War Department and became one of the most recognisable military buildings in the world. Its later connection with September 11 would become one of the most striking coincidences in modern history: sixty years after construction began, a hijacked passenger aircraft would crash into the Pentagon during the attacks of 2001. September 11, 1973, brought one of the most consequential political crises in modern Latin American history. A military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet overthrew Chile’s democratically elected President Salvador Allende. Military forces surrounded the presidential palace, La Moneda, in Santiago, and the building was bombarded from the air. According to historical material from Chile’s National Library of Congress, Allende entered the government headquarters in the morning, the aerial bombardment began shortly before noon, and Allende died inside the palace later that afternoon. The coup ended Allende’s government and began a military dictatorship that would last for roughly seventeen years. Chile experienced political repression, serious human-rights controversies and major economic changes under Pinochet. The coup took place against a background of intense political polarisation, economic difficulties, social conflict and Cold War tensions. Its legacy remains deeply debated in Chile, making September 11, 1973, an important date in the history of democracy, authoritarianism and political intervention in Latin America. September 11, 2001, created an entirely different meaning for the date. On that morning, four commercial passenger aircraft were hijacked in the United States in coordinated terrorist attacks. Two planes were flown into the World Trade Center towers in New York City. A third aircraft struck the Pentagon near Washington, D.C., while United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers and crew attempted to regain control of the aircraft. The Library of Congress began collecting photographs, documents, publications, artwork and digital materials relating to the attacks almost immediately, recognising that the event would become a major part of the historical record. Nearly 3,000 people were killed, thousands more were injured, and the attacks caused enormous physical, economic and psychological damage. The World Trade Center towers collapsed after the aircraft impacts and fires, devastating Lower Manhattan. The Pentagon was heavily damaged, while Flight 93 crashed in rural Pennsylvania. The attacks rapidly transformed American foreign policy and domestic security while influencing international politics for decades. The United States responded by launching the War on Terror, including military operations in Afghanistan beginning in October 2001. The attacks also produced major changes in aviation security, intelligence cooperation, border controls and counterterrorism policy. Airports introduced much stricter screening procedures, passenger security became a central concern of international aviation, and governments around the world reconsidered how terrorist organisations could exploit modern transportation and communication systems. For millions of people who experienced the attacks directly or watched them unfold on live television, September 11 became a dividing line between “before” and “after.” The historical memory of 9/11 is also unusually extensive. Photographs, television broadcasts, documentaries, books, artworks and personal recordings preserved the event from countless perspectives. The Library of Congress and other institutions began collecting these materials almost immediately, creating large archives designed to preserve not only what happened but also how societies responded to it. September 11 also contains less widely remembered stories. In 1812, Russian settlers formally established Fort Ross on the northern California coast, reflecting Russia’s attempt to expand its presence along the Pacific coast of North America. In 1940, engineer George Stibitz demonstrated an early form of remote computer operation, showing how telecommunications could be combined with computing. In 1941, construction began on the Pentagon while President Franklin D. Roosevelt also ordered the U.S. Navy to take a more aggressive stance toward German vessels operating in waters between the American coast and Iceland. These developments showed that even before the United States formally entered the Second World War, its military and strategic involvement in the conflict was steadily increasing. Looking across the centuries, September 11 becomes a remarkable historical timeline. The Battle of Stirling Bridge represents a nation fighting for independence. Henry Hudson’s voyage represents exploration and the beginning of another stage of European expansion. The Battle of Brandywine represents a revolutionary movement struggling to survive against a powerful empire. Hamilton’s appointment represents the difficult process of building a functioning national government. The Battle of Plattsburgh reflects the importance of military strategy and national sovereignty. The construction of the Pentagon symbolises the emergence of modern military administration. The Chilean coup demonstrates how political polarisation, military power and Cold War tensions can destroy democratic institutions. Finally, the attacks of September 11, 2001, became a defining global event that changed security policy, warfare, international relations and the collective memory of an entire generation. These events do not share one simple cause, but they repeatedly raise similar questions about power, freedom, security, sovereignty and the way societies respond to crises. That is what makes September 11 such a remarkable historical date. Before 2001, the date already belonged to many different stories from many different centuries. After 2001, the words “September 11” acquired a global meaning almost instantly. Remembering the date today should therefore involve more than remembering one tragedy. It should also mean understanding the long historical background that existed before it, the political and social consequences that followed it, and the many ways in which a single date can accumulate layers of meaning across centuries.
