September 10 in History|From Jamestown and the Battle of Lake Erie to the Launch of the Large Hadron Collider

2026-09-10

September 10 connects exploration, warfare, energy and science, tracing a remarkable journey from early colonial America to modern particle physics.

佩里戰後留下的著名訊息「We have met the enemy, and they are ours」,後來成為美國軍事史上的經典名句。

English Version

September 10 brings together an unusually broad collection of historical stories, ranging from the survival of an early English settlement in North America to naval warfare, imperial tragedy, modern diplomacy, global energy politics and frontier particle physics. On September 10, 1608, the English explorer and colonist John Smith became president of the governing council at Jamestown, one of the earliest permanent English settlements in North America. Jamestown was still struggling with disease, hunger, internal disputes and difficult relations with the Indigenous peoples of the region. Smith brought a practical approach to the settlement’s problems. He emphasised food production, defence, exploration and trade, helping the fragile colony become more organised and self-sufficient. The Library of Congress notes that under Smith’s leadership the settlement’s survival prospects improved, while he also explored and mapped the Chesapeake region. His later work would contribute to European knowledge of the North American coastline, and he eventually used the name “New England” for the northeastern region he mapped. The importance of September 10, 1608 therefore lies not simply in the appointment of one colonial leader. Jamestown became an important foundation of English settlement in North America, and Smith’s experience illustrates how survival in the early colonial period depended on practical matters such as food, labour, geography, navigation, diplomacy and defence. More than two centuries later, on September 10, 1813, the focus moved to the Great Lakes during the War of 1812. American naval commander Oliver Hazard Perry led a fleet of nine ships against six British warships in the Battle of Lake Erie. The battle was fiercely contested. Perry’s flagship, USS Lawrence, was badly damaged and effectively disabled, but he transferred to USS Niagara and returned to the fight. His fleet eventually forced the British squadron to surrender. The American victory gave the United States control of Lake Erie and disrupted British supply lines in the region. Perry’s famous message after the battle, declaring that the Americans had met the enemy and that the enemy was theirs, became one of the best-known statements in American military history. The battle demonstrated that control of geography could be as important as battlefield strength. The Great Lakes were major transportation and supply routes, and naval control of the waterway affected military operations across the surrounding territory. Shipbuilding, logistics, command decisions and geography all combined to determine the outcome. September 10 also recalls a very different kind of historical event. In 1898, Empress Elisabeth of Austria, better known as “Sisi”, was assassinated in Geneva by the Italian anarchist Luigi Lucheni. Elisabeth had been travelling privately in Switzerland when she became the target of the attacker. Her death shocked European royalty and gradually transformed her into one of the most romanticised figures associated with the final years of the Habsburg monarchy. Later films, novels and popular culture created an image of Sisi that often differed from the complicated historical woman herself. Her story demonstrates how historical memory continues to evolve after a person’s death, as fact, legend and popular imagination become intertwined. In 1939, September 10 marked another important change in international relations. Canada formally declared war on Nazi Germany, following Britain and France into the Second World War. The Canadian declaration came after a parliamentary process, reflecting the country’s growing diplomatic independence within the British Commonwealth. Canada subsequently mobilised substantial military, industrial and economic resources for the Allied war effort. The Second World War became a major stage in the development of Canada’s modern national identity, demonstrating that the country could make an independent decision about entering a global conflict while still remaining closely connected to Britain. Twenty-one years later, September 10 became important in the history of global energy. In 1960, representatives of Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela gathered in Baghdad to establish the foundations of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, better known as OPEC. The founding conference ran from September 10 to September 14, and the organisation emerged from a shared desire among major oil-producing countries to strengthen their position in the international oil market and protect their sovereignty over natural resources. Oil had already become essential to transportation, industry and military power, but its strategic importance would grow enormously during the twentieth century. The creation of OPEC therefore represented more than the formation of another international organisation. It marked the increasing ability of resource-producing countries to coordinate their interests and influence the global economic system. Over subsequent decades, OPEC became one of the most important organisations in international energy politics, and its decisions and collective policies became closely watched by governments, companies and financial markets around the world. September 10, 1967, brought another example of the relationship between local identity and international politics. Gibraltar held a referendum in which the overwhelming majority of voters chose to remain connected with Britain rather than become part of Spain. Gibraltar’s status has remained a sensitive issue in British-Spanish relations, showing how a small territory can become strategically important because of its location, history, sovereignty and the political identity of its population. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, September 10 had acquired a very different scientific significance. On September 10, 2008, CERN successfully circulated the first beam around the Large Hadron Collider, or LHC. At 10:28 that morning, a beam travelled through the full 27-kilometre ring of the enormous particle accelerator. CERN described the achievement as a major transition from more than two decades of preparation into a new era of scientific research. The LHC is located in a tunnel around 100 metres underground near the border between Switzerland and France. Its 27-kilometre ring contains superconducting magnets and sophisticated accelerating structures designed to push protons or ions to extremely high energies. Eventually, two beams can travel in opposite directions and collide, allowing scientists to investigate the fundamental structure of matter and conditions resembling those of the early universe. The successful first beam was much more than a technical demonstration. The LHC represented decades of international scientific cooperation involving physicists, engineers, technicians and research institutions from many countries. Every component, from superconducting magnets and vacuum systems to particle detectors and control systems, required extraordinary precision. The moment the first beam completed its journey around the entire ring showed that one of the most ambitious scientific machines ever constructed could actually operate as designed. It became an important milestone in modern particle physics and eventually contributed to discoveries that transformed our understanding of the fundamental particles and forces of nature. September 10 therefore contains a fascinating theme that links events separated by centuries: exploration. In 1608, John Smith explored the geography of a new colonial world and tried to make a fragile settlement survive. In 1813, Perry’s fleet fought for control of an important inland waterway. In 1960, oil-producing countries explored a new form of international cooperation that would give them greater influence over global energy markets. In 2008, scientists explored matter at an almost unimaginable level of detail. The technologies were completely different, but the underlying human impulse was remarkably similar. People have always tried to understand their environment, secure resources, expand their influence and push beyond existing boundaries. The tools changed from ships and maps to warships, diplomatic organisations and particle accelerators, but the desire to explore the unknown remained. Looking back at September 10, we can therefore see more than a collection of unrelated anniversaries. We can see a four-century journey through changing ideas of exploration and power. Jamestown represents the expansion of European settlement into North America. The Battle of Lake Erie demonstrates how geography and military technology could determine control of a strategic region. The assassination of Empress Elisabeth reveals the vulnerability of Europe’s old royal order. Canada’s declaration of war reflects the gradual development of national diplomatic independence. The creation of OPEC shows how natural resources could become a source of international political influence. The first beam in the LHC represents humanity’s attempt to investigate the deepest structure of matter itself. These events belong to different eras and involve completely different people, yet together they show how history advances through moments of experimentation, conflict, cooperation and discovery. Sometimes a turning point comes through a battle. Sometimes it comes through a political decision or the creation of an international organisation. Sometimes it comes when a tiny beam of particles successfully travels around a 27-kilometre underground ring. September 10 is therefore an especially fitting date for looking at history, because it illustrates how humanity has moved from exploring new lands and waterways to exploring the fundamental building blocks of the universe. The frontier has changed, but the instinct to discover what lies beyond the known world has remained remarkably constant.
