English Version

Molière, born Jean-Baptiste Poquelin in Paris in 1622, is widely regarded as the greatest comic playwright in French history. Although his father expected him to inherit the family’s successful business as a royal upholsterer, the young Poquelin was irresistibly drawn to the theatre. After studying law, he abandoned a secure professional future to pursue acting and playwriting, a decision that carried enormous financial risks. His newly founded theatre company struggled in its early years, leading to debt and even a brief imprisonment. Rather than surrendering his ambitions, Molière spent more than a decade touring provincial France with his troupe. These years proved invaluable, allowing him to observe people from every social class—nobles, merchants, physicians, clergy, servants, and ordinary citizens. Their ambitions, flaws, and peculiar habits became the inspiration for the unforgettable characters that later filled his plays. In 1658, his company returned to Paris and performed before King Louis XIV. The performance won royal approval, giving Molière the protection and prestige needed to establish himself as the leading dramatist of the French court. His comedies quickly gained popularity because they entertained audiences while exposing the hypocrisy hidden beneath respectable appearances. Among his greatest achievements is Tartuffe, a brilliant satire about a fraudulent religious devotee who manipulates a wealthy family through false piety. The play provoked fierce opposition from religious authorities and was temporarily banned, demonstrating the power of theatre to challenge established institutions. Another enduring masterpiece, The Miser, introduces Harpagon, one of literature’s most memorable misers, whose obsession with wealth overwhelms his love for family and common sense. Through exaggerated yet recognizable behavior, Molière revealed the destructive nature of greed with both humor and compassion. Other classics such as Don Juan, The Misanthrope, The Bourgeois Gentleman, and The Imaginary Invalid continued his exploration of vanity, pretension, superstition, and social ambition. His comedy rarely depended on simple jokes alone. Instead, it exposed universal human weaknesses, encouraging audiences to laugh at themselves as much as at the characters on stage. Molière believed that comedy should entertain while also correcting society by revealing its absurdities. His dialogue was lively, his plots carefully structured, and his characters psychologically convincing despite their comic exaggeration. This combination allowed his plays to remain relevant across centuries because the emotions, ambitions, and flaws they portray are fundamentally timeless. His dedication to the theatre lasted until the very end of his life. In 1673, while performing the title role in The Imaginary Invalid, Molière became seriously ill during the performance. Refusing to disappoint the audience, he completed the play before collapsing shortly afterward. He died later that same day at the age of fifty-one. Because actors were viewed with suspicion by religious authorities of the time, he initially faced difficulties receiving a Christian burial, though royal intervention ultimately ensured his funeral. More than three centuries later, Molière’s influence remains extraordinary. His plays continue to be staged throughout the world, and his name has become synonymous with French dramatic excellence. In France, the French language itself is sometimes affectionately called “the language of Molière,” reflecting his lasting contribution not only to theatre but also to the nation’s cultural identity. His legacy endures because his comedies remind audiences that laughter is one of the most powerful ways to confront human weakness and inspire self-reflection.
