English Version
The history of game publishing and marketing is essentially a shift from scarcity of distribution to scarcity of attention. In the arcade era, the game itself was the advertisement—players gathered, watched, and queued, and popularity was visible in real time. With the rise of home consoles and boxed retail, publishers gained power through control of shelf space; cover art, magazine reviews, and store placement became decisive factors in whether a title succeeded. Marketing relied heavily on television spots, print media, and trade shows, delivering messages in a largely one-directional flow that nevertheless helped build iconic brands. As the internet matured, digital distribution platforms removed physical constraints, allowing smaller developers to reach global audiences directly. Promotion evolved alongside this shift, with forums, official websites, and early social networks enabling players to discuss, critique, and amplify word of mouth. The explosion of mobile gaming expanded the market dramatically, but also intensified competition; free-to-play models and in-app purchases transformed marketing into an ongoing lifecycle rather than a pre-launch event, where analytics and retention strategies became central. With the dominance of social media and video platforms, influencers, streamers, and community voices began shaping purchasing decisions, pushing marketing toward shareable, watchable experiences—sometimes a single viral clip or live stream can outperform traditional campaigns. Trailers grew more cinematic, while collaborations, crossovers, and limited-time events positioned games within a broader cultural landscape. Today, algorithm-driven discovery and targeted advertising offer precision, yet they also intensify the battle for user attention. Standing out amid constant noise has become the defining challenge of publishing strategy. At the same time, audiences increasingly value transparency and authenticity; developer diaries, early access programs, and direct community engagement foster trust and long-term loyalty. Game publishing and marketing have evolved from transactional promotion into relationship-building ecosystems, shifting from product-centric to experience- and community-driven models. As cloud gaming, AI-generated content, and immersive technologies continue to advance, this evolution will persist, redefining how games are discovered, shared, and lived by players.
