September 9 in History|From the Naming of the United States and California Statehood to Queen Elizabeth II’s Historic Reign

2026-09-09

September 9 connects the birth of nations, wartime turning points, technology, civil rights and royalty, revealing how one date can span centuries of change.

1956年9月9日,美國電視觀眾第一次在《The Ed Sullivan Show》中看到貓王 Elvis Presley。

English Version

September 9 brings together an extraordinary range of stories about nations, freedom, war, technology, popular culture, civil rights and political change. One of the most important events associated with the date occurred in 1776, during the American Revolution, when the Second Continental Congress formally adopted “United States of America” as the name of the new nation. Until then, “United Colonies” had been commonly used. The change may appear simple, but it represented a major step in the development of a new national identity. The colonies were no longer presenting themselves merely as separate territories resisting British rule; they were increasingly defining themselves as a new political entity. The name United States of America would eventually become one of the most recognisable national names in the world, and September 9 marks the moment when that identity was formally established. September 9 also recalls the Stono Rebellion of 1739, one of the most important uprisings by enslaved people in colonial British North America. On the morning of September 9, a group of Black Carolinians gathered near the Stono River in South Carolina, seized weapons and ammunition and began moving south. Other enslaved people joined them as they travelled, while several plantations and buildings were attacked. Colonial authorities eventually suppressed the rebellion, but the event became an important part of the history of resistance to slavery. The response was also significant: colonial governments introduced or strengthened laws restricting the movement, education and assembly of enslaved people. The Stono Rebellion therefore reveals both the determination of enslaved people to seek freedom and the increasingly restrictive system imposed by colonial authorities. In 1791, September 9 became associated with another foundational moment in American history when the federal capital was formally named Washington. The new capital would eventually develop into the centre of American political life, home to the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court and numerous national monuments. The decision to name the city after George Washington helped establish a permanent connection between the country’s first president and its political centre. In 1839, the same date was connected with another major development: British scientist and astronomer John Herschel made important contributions to early glass-plate photography. Photography would eventually transform the way humanity recorded people, places and events. From glass plates and film to digital cameras and smartphones, the history of photography is also the history of how visual memory became increasingly accessible to ordinary people. September 9, 1850, brought a major geographical and political transformation when California became the 31st state of the United States. The territory had experienced extraordinary population growth following the discovery of gold, attracting migrants, entrepreneurs and fortune seekers from across the United States and beyond. California entered the Union without first going through the usual territorial stage, reflecting the extraordinary speed of its development. Over the following generations, California would become one of the most important regions in the United States, producing global centres of entertainment, technology, finance, agriculture and culture. San Francisco, Los Angeles, Hollywood and Silicon Valley would eventually give the state influence far beyond its original role as a frontier region. September 9 is still commemorated as California Admission Day. In 1919, September 9 marked the beginning of the Boston Police Strike. Large numbers of police officers left their posts after disputes over wages, working conditions and union recognition. The strike occurred during a period of intense labour unrest in the United States following the First World War. Governor Calvin Coolidge responded firmly, refusing to allow the police force to remain absent and calling in replacements and state forces. The event became an important episode in American labour history and helped increase Coolidge’s national political reputation. It also raised enduring questions about the balance between workers’ rights, public safety and the responsibilities of essential public services. During the Second World War, September 9 was associated with several major developments. In 1942, a Japanese floatplane launched from a submarine dropped incendiary bombs near Brookings, Oregon, in an attempt to start forest fires. The attack caused little damage, but it had enormous symbolic significance because it represented the first aerial bombing of the continental United States by a foreign power during the war. The incident demonstrated that the geographical boundaries of modern warfare had become much wider than traditional battlefields. In 1943, Allied forces landed at Salerno and Taranto as the campaign to push German forces out of Italy intensified. Italy had already agreed to an armistice with the Allies, but German troops rapidly occupied large parts of the country. Instead of ending the fighting, Italy became another major battlefield in Europe. Two years later, September 9, 1945, marked an important moment in the conclusion of the Second Sino-Japanese War. Japanese forces formally surrendered in China, with the ceremony at Nanjing becoming a powerful symbol of the end of years of Japanese invasion and occupation. The event represented not merely a military capitulation but the closing of a devastating chapter in modern Chinese history. On September 9, 1948, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, commonly known as North Korea, was formally established. Following the defeat of Japan in 1945, the Korean Peninsula had been divided roughly along the 38th parallel, with Soviet forces occupying the north and American forces occupying the south. Efforts to create a unified Korean government gradually gave way to the political divisions of the emerging Cold War. The establishment of North Korea, following the creation of South Korea earlier that year, institutionalised the division of the peninsula. That division eventually contributed to the Korean War and remains one of the most enduring geopolitical divisions of the modern world. September 9, 1956, brought a major moment in popular culture when Elvis Presley made his first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Television allowed millions of Americans to see the young performer at the same time, dramatically expanding his cultural reach. Elvis’s music, appearance and energetic performance style attracted enormous enthusiasm from young audiences while provoking criticism from more conservative parts of society. His television appearances demonstrated how mass broadcasting could turn a performer into a national phenomenon almost overnight. Elvis would eventually become one of the defining figures of twentieth-century popular music. On September 9, 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Civil Rights Act of 1957, the first major federal civil rights legislation in the United States since the Reconstruction era. The law focused particularly on voting rights and established a Civil Rights Division within the Department of Justice. Although the legislation had limitations and did not immediately solve the deep racial inequalities of the country, it represented an important change in federal involvement in civil rights. It also helped establish a foundation for the more powerful civil rights legislation that would follow during the 1960s. September 9, 1971, became one of the most controversial dates in the history of the American prison system when prisoners at Attica Correctional Facility in New York seized control of part of the prison and took staff members hostage. The prisoners demanded better living conditions, improved medical treatment and greater recognition of their rights. Negotiations continued for several days before state police and the National Guard stormed the facility. Forty-three people ultimately died, including both prisoners and hostages. The Attica uprising became a lasting symbol of debates about prison conditions, prisoners’ rights, government authority and the use of force. It also demonstrated how institutional neglect can create tensions that eventually become impossible to contain. September 9, 1971, was also significant in music history because John Lennon released his album Imagine. The title song would become one of the most recognisable songs associated with ideas of peace and global unity. Lennon’s work reflected a period when popular music was increasingly being used to express political ideas, challenge social conventions and imagine alternative futures. September 9 therefore belongs not only to the history of governments and wars, but also to the transformation of twentieth-century culture. In 1991, September 9 marked the independence of Tajikistan from the Soviet Union. As the Soviet system entered its final months, republic after republic declared independence, leading eventually to the dissolution of the Soviet Union at the end of the year. Tajikistan’s independence helped reshape the political map of Central Asia and created a new generation of independent states in the region. In 1993, September 9 became an important date in Middle Eastern diplomacy when Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization formally recognised each other. The mutual recognition was a major breakthrough in the Oslo peace process and opened the way for further agreements between the two sides. Although the peace process later encountered serious obstacles and unresolved issues, the 1993 recognition remains an important example of former adversaries attempting to move from confrontation toward negotiation. September 9, 2015, was especially significant for Britain. On that day, Queen Elizabeth II surpassed the record previously held by Queen Victoria and became Britain’s longest-reigning monarch. Elizabeth had ascended the throne in 1952 and had already witnessed extraordinary changes by the time she reached the record. Her reign covered the post-war reconstruction of Britain, the transformation of the British Empire and Commonwealth, the Cold War, changing relations with Europe, the rise of mass television, the arrival of the internet and the emergence of smartphones and social media. When she died in 2022, she had reigned for 70 years and 214 days. September 9 therefore became an important landmark in the history of the British monarchy, marking the moment when a new record was established after more than six decades on the throne. Looking back across September 9, the date becomes almost like a historical corridor connecting very different eras. In 1739, enslaved people rebelled in the struggle for freedom. In 1776, the new American nation formally adopted the name United States of America. In 1850, California joined the Union and began a journey that would eventually make it one of the world’s most influential regions in technology, entertainment and culture. In 1919, the Boston Police Strike exposed tensions between labour rights and public authority. In 1942, the Second World War reached the American mainland through a small but symbolically important aerial attack. In 1945, Japanese forces formally surrendered in China, closing a major chapter of the war in East Asia. In 1948, the division of Korea became institutionalised through the creation of North Korea. In 1956, Elvis Presley used television to help redefine popular culture. In 1957, the United States took another step toward federal civil rights protection. In 1971, the Attica uprising exposed serious problems within the prison system. In 1991, Tajikistan emerged as an independent state after the collapse of Soviet power. In 1993, Israeli and Palestinian representatives opened a new diplomatic chapter through mutual recognition. Finally, in 2015, Queen Elizabeth II became Britain’s longest-reigning monarch. These events are not directly connected, yet together they demonstrate how history is built from many different forces: nations seeking identity, people demanding freedom, technology changing communication, wars reshaping borders, societies challenging institutions and leaders attempting to respond to a changing world. September 9 is therefore far more than another date on the calendar. It is a reminder that the modern world was created through countless decisions, struggles, discoveries and moments of change, each leaving traces that continue to shape the present.
