English Version
The first warm breeze of spring quietly entered the Grand View Garden. The thin mist that had covered the lake during winter had disappeared, young willow leaves had begun to unfold, and flowers that had remained dormant for months were slowly returning to life. Morning sunlight slipped between the rooftops and scattered delicate patterns across the stone paths. Birds called from the trees, and the entire garden seemed to have awakened into a new season. Standing beside the lake, Baoyu felt the spring wind upon his face and remembered the person he had once been. For many years, he had feared losing people, feared farewells, and feared that sincere affection would eventually lead to pain. Sometimes he protected himself by closing his heart, believing that distance was safer than trust. Yet after surviving such a long winter within himself, he finally understood that protecting the heart from every possible wound also prevents it from receiving warmth. True strength does not mean becoming cold. It means remaining gentle even after life has given us reasons to become otherwise. Baoyu reached out and caught a young leaf carried down from the branches. Watching it tremble lightly in his palm, he felt an unexpected calm. He remembered people and events that had once caused him deep sorrow, but when he looked back now, he no longer saw only pain. Those experiences had left wounds, yet they had also taught him patience, compassion, and gratitude. He had learned that everyone carries difficulties that may not be visible to others. Perhaps kindness does not mean forgetting what hurt us. Perhaps it means remembering the pain and still refusing to pass it on. Along another path, Daiyu walked slowly through the garden. The spring breeze lifted the edge of her sleeves and moved through the newly grown branches beside her. She stopped before a tree covered in fresh blossoms and watched the petals tremble beneath the sunlight. She remembered a time when she guarded her heart carefully, afraid to hope too much or trust too deeply because the more precious something became, the more frightening its loss seemed. But she now understood that gentleness and weakness were not the same thing. A person could remain kind while also becoming strong. They could remember old tears while still choosing to smile again. True gentleness was not surrendering to fate. It was seeing the world’s imperfections clearly and still choosing to treat both oneself and others with compassion. She touched a flowering branch and felt a trace of morning dew upon her fingertips. The coolness reminded her of winter, while the blossoms before her announced that the season had already changed. Life was much the same. No matter how cold yesterday had been, today did not have to remain winter. One step forward was enough for spring to begin approaching. By afternoon, the sunlight had grown warmer. Willow branches moved softly beside the lake, and swallows crossed beneath the rooftops, their reflections briefly appearing upon the water. Baoyu and Daiyu met beside the shore. They did not discuss old wounds or attempt to predict what tomorrow might bring. Instead, they simply stood together and looked at the garden returning to life. Baoyu said quietly, “Spring has truly returned.” Daiyu looked toward the distant blossoms and smiled. “Perhaps some things never truly left.” Baoyu said nothing. He watched the water and understood that gentleness had never really disappeared. It had simply been hidden beneath disappointment, fear, and exhaustion. When we release some of those defenses, we discover that the warmth is still there. Together they walked slowly along the lake. The breeze moved around them, carrying the faint fragrance of flowers. Along the path, they noticed familiar places and small details they had once overlooked—a tiny flower beside a wall, a young leaf resting upon a stone step, a circle of ripples spreading across the water. Ordinary things suddenly seemed precious. Baoyu realized that perhaps what a person needs to rediscover is not always someone who has been lost, but the earlier version of themselves who still believed that life could be beautiful. Daiyu understood something similar. Choosing kindness again after hardship did not mean forgetting the past. It meant refusing to allow the past to decide the shape of the future. As evening approached, the entire garden was covered in warm golden light. Reflections of flowers drifted across the lake while the breeze moved softly through the branches. One by one, lanterns began glowing along the distant corridors. Standing beneath the long veranda, Baoyu and Daiyu watched the spring landscape and felt a peace they had not known for a long time. They understood that storms might still come. There could still be separation, disappointment, and loss. Yet this time they no longer wanted to close their hearts against everything that might hurt them. They had learned that life is worth continuing not because it is free from pain, but because even after pain, the heart can still recognize sunlight, fragrance, and the warmth of spring. Night slowly descended over the garden. The spring breeze continued passing between the trees, stirring willow branches and carrying petals through the air. Baoyu looked toward the stars and felt a new sense of ease. He understood that maturity was not becoming impossible to hurt. It was knowing that we have been wounded and still choosing to believe in kindness. Daiyu looked toward the distant horizon and realized that one of life’s greatest gifts is the ability to welcome another spring after surviving the coldest season. The breeze did not bring any dramatic transformation. It simply moved gently across the garden and reminded them that life had always been moving forward. Things once lost, things once awaited, and moments that once brought tears had all become part of yesterday. The young leaves and opening flowers now offered a different message: another day had begun. Baoyu and Daiyu slowly walked away along the flower path, without demanding immediate answers and without fearing what tomorrow might contain. They carried hearts that had become soft again and followed the spring breeze toward whatever waited ahead. Perhaps true gentleness in life is choosing kindness after seeing both the warmth and cruelty of the world; valuing every meeting after experiencing farewell; and allowing the heart to feel sunlight again after it has known pain. The spring breeze continued to blow, the flowers continued to bloom, and the tenderness they once believed they had lost quietly began returning to their hearts with the arrival of a new season.
