Longing Doll is a psychological thriller marking actress Miyabi’s debut as a director. The film explores the characteristics associated with HSP, or Highly Sensitive Person, through the story of a woman whose sensitivity makes her especially aware of subtle changes in the people around her. The protagonist, Akane, works at a flower shop. Still trying to recover from an unrequited relationship, she decides to sell items connected to her former boyfriend through a second-hand marketplace app. By getting rid of these reminders of the past, she hopes to put the failed relationship behind her and begin moving forward. Her attempt to start over takes an unexpected turn when a woman named Naomi arrives at the flower shop where she works. The two quickly discover that they share many similarities. They get along almost immediately and gradually become closer. At first, Akane appears to have found someone with whom she can comfortably connect. But as their relationship develops, she begins noticing things about Naomi’s words and behaviour that make her increasingly uneasy. What initially feels like an easy friendship begins to develop an unfamiliar tension. Akane starts questioning whether Naomi’s interest in her is really as ordinary as it first appeared. The film’s central concept is closely connected to HSP. The term Highly Sensitive Person describes people who tend to experience sensory and emotional stimuli more intensely and are often highly aware of subtle changes in their surroundings. Akane has these characteristics, making her particularly sensitive to shifts in interpersonal relationships. Naomi initially seems to share many qualities with her, allowing the two women to form a close bond quickly. Yet that very sense of similarity gradually becomes part of what makes their relationship unsettling. Akane begins to suspect that Naomi’s attention may go beyond ordinary friendship or admiration. She slowly becomes the object of Naomi’s distorted longing—an emotional fixation that initially appears positive but gradually develops into something much more unpredictable. Miyabi directed the film for the first time while also writing the screenplay and playing Akane herself. She has said that she also possesses HSP traits, and she projected aspects of her own sensibility into the character. As a result, Akane’s sensitivity and awareness of subtle emotional changes form an important part of the film’s characterisation. Miyabi previously appeared in films including Until the Day I Gain Freedom and A Lump of Fat. With Longing Doll, she moves beyond acting to take responsibility for directing and screenwriting as well as leading the cast. Naomi is played by Yoko Akita, who has appeared in independent films including (Instrumental). Naomi during her high school years is portrayed by Tomoko Hoshi, who made an impression in films directed by Takashi Shimizu, including Minna no Uta and Who Is That Girl? By showing Naomi at different stages of her life, the film adds another layer of mystery to the character and her relationship with Akane. At first, the story appears to be about two women who become friends because they discover how much they have in common. But as Akane begins to question Naomi’s behaviour, their relationship gradually changes. What Akane senses is not straightforward hostility. Instead, it is a difficult-to-define feeling that something about their relationship is no longer normal. The boundary between being admired and being watched too closely becomes one of the film’s central psychological tensions. The Japanese word “akogare” refers to longing, admiration or an idealised form of aspiration. These feelings are normally positive. But when admiration becomes distorted and one person begins projecting an idealised image onto another, the relationship can take on a very different character. Longing Doll develops its psychological thriller premise from precisely this idea, gradually transforming something that initially sounds beautiful into a source of anxiety. Everyday elements such as the flower shop, the second-hand marketplace app, Akane’s failed relationship and her new friendship give the beginning of the story an ordinary atmosphere. Akane is simply trying to reorganise her life after heartbreak and leave the past behind. Yet just as she attempts to start over, Naomi enters her life and draws her into a relationship that she can no longer completely understand. This transition from ordinary life to psychological unease is one of the film’s defining characteristics. The more Akane tries to understand Naomi, the more she senses that there may be an unexplained purpose behind her behaviour. Small details begin to feel significant, while Akane’s heightened sensitivity makes her increasingly aware of the changes taking place around her. Is Akane simply being overly sensitive, or is she genuinely detecting a threat? The film uses this uncertainty to place the audience alongside its protagonist, gradually weakening the sense that the relationship can be clearly understood. Longing Doll received the Grand Prix at the 2024 Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival, earning recognition as an independent psychological thriller. Rather than simply portraying a strange friendship, the film examines what happens when one person becomes excessively idealised by another. Once Akane becomes Naomi’s imagined ideal, the normal boundaries between two individuals begin to lose their balance. The question becomes whether Akane can continue to live according to her own identity when another person has begun defining her through an idealised image. One of the film’s most unsettling qualities is that the danger does not initially appear as obvious horror. It begins with an ordinary encounter, develops through rapid familiarity, and then gradually turns into suspicion and unease. By the time Akane realises that Naomi’s admiration may have crossed a normal boundary, their relationship has already changed beyond easy return.
