Salaryman Kintaro: Akatsuki Arc is the first part of a new two-film adaptation of Hiroshi Motomiya’s classic manga Salaryman Kintaro. The story follows Kintaro Yajima, an uncompromising man who once led a motorcycle gang before becoming a tuna fisherman and eventually entering the world of corporate employment. After leaving behind his life as a fisherman, Kintaro finds himself in a completely different kind of environment: the modern Japanese workplace. Corporate society is governed by rules, hierarchy, relationships and competing interests, but Kintaro has little patience for conventions that he believes are unreasonable. Rather than quietly adapting himself to the system, he relies on his natural courage, physical strength and refusal to back down as he confronts the challenges of the Reiwa era. Kintaro’s personality is shaped by his unusual past. As a former gang leader and fisherman, he is accustomed to direct confrontation and difficult situations. These qualities become both his greatest strengths and potential weaknesses once he enters a corporate environment. Unlike the world he previously knew, the modern company requires him to navigate complicated relationships and social expectations. Yet Kintaro refuses to surrender his own sense of right and wrong simply because he has entered a new environment. His approach soon brings him into conflict with powerful figures inside the company. One of the most important people in his corner is Moriyuki Yamato, chairman of Yamato Construction and one of Kintaro’s greatest supporters. At the same time, Kintaro faces Takashi, his rival, and Oshima, the company’s second-generation president, who stands firmly against him. These characters represent different forces within the corporate world and create a complicated network of rivalry, support and conflict around Kintaro. Takashi is played by Yu Shirota and serves as one of Kintaro’s principal rivals. Their relationship adds another layer to the story, going beyond a simple division between allies and enemies. Moriyuki Yamato is portrayed by Takaaki Enoki. As chairman of Yamato Construction, he understands Kintaro’s personality and becomes an important source of support. Oshima, the second-generation company president who opposes Kintaro, is played by Jun Hashimoto. Their confrontation reflects the tension between Kintaro’s direct approach and established corporate authority. Executive director Kurokawa, played by Toshinori Omi, takes on the role of teaching Kintaro the meaning of a “salaryman’s pride.” Through him, Kintaro must learn that surviving in corporate society involves more than simply having strength and courage. It also requires understanding responsibility, professional standards and the expectations attached to working life. Kintaro’s relationships also extend beyond the company. Misuzu, the manager of a high-end club who has feelings for him, is played by Nicole Ishida. Li Shurei, the leader of a semi-organised street group, is played by Ayane. Kazumi, an employee who supports Kintaro within the company, is played by Yuka Kageyama. The story also features Kayo, an elderly woman who holds an important key to the narrative, portrayed by Atsuko Asano. Together, these characters connect Kintaro to different aspects of the society around him, turning his journey into more than a straightforward workplace struggle. At the heart of Kintaro’s character is his refusal to accept rules simply because they are traditional or because everyone else follows them. His past as a gang leader and tuna fisherman has given him a strong and straightforward personality. In the corporate world, this directness can create trouble, but it also gives him the courage to confront problems that others may avoid. The workplace of the Reiwa era is very different from the environments Kintaro has previously experienced. Corporate structures, relationships between employees and social values continue to evolve, but Kintaro approaches these changes according to his own principles. He may not understand every corporate convention, but he has a clear personal sense of what he believes is right and wrong. This remains one of the central appeals of the Salaryman Kintaro series: a man who appears completely unsuited to office life enters the corporate world and challenges its contradictions in his own uncompromising way. The film is directed by Ten Shimoyama, director of ALIVEHOON, while Shinichi Tanaka, known for the television drama series GTO, wrote the screenplay. Together, they bring the classic character into contemporary society and allow Kintaro’s story to unfold in the Reiwa era. Nobuyuki Suzuki, who has appeared in the Tokyo Revengers film series, takes on the role of Kintaro, portraying a character driven by physical energy, determination and an unwillingness to surrender. The new adaptation is structured as two films, with Salaryman Kintaro: Akatsuki Arc serving as the first chapter. The first film establishes Kintaro’s new life in corporate society and introduces the relationships and conflicts that will shape his journey, while leaving room for the story to continue in the second film. The theme song is performed by BALLISTIK BOYZ from EXILE TRIBE, adding further energy to a film built around determination, confrontation and the challenges of modern working life. At its core, Salaryman Kintaro: Akatsuki Arc continues the defining spirit of the original series: regardless of how much the world changes, a person can choose to confront life in their own way. From motorcycle gang leader to tuna fisherman and then salaryman, every stage of Kintaro’s life represents a new beginning.
