Co-directed by Hisashi Ashizawa and Sota Judai, All the Stars in the Sky is a moving historical documentary that examines the Tsushima Maru tragedy, one of the darkest yet least discussed civilian disasters of World War II in Japan. Through survivor testimonies, family memories, archival research, and a deeply personal investigation, the film seeks to restore voices that were silenced by wartime censorship for decades. On August 22, 1944, the evacuation ship Tsushima Maru departed Okinawa carrying hundreds of schoolchildren and civilians bound for Kyushu. During the voyage, the vessel was torpedoed by an American submarine, causing the deaths of 784 children in what became Japan’s largest wartime school evacuation disaster. Despite the immense loss of life, strict military censorship prevented survivors and families from speaking openly about the tragedy, leaving countless questions unanswered for generations. Central to the documentary is Takao Nakajima, a crew member aboard the Tsushima Maru who survived the sinking against extraordinary odds. Clinging to the remains of a shattered raft, he managed not only to stay alive but also to rescue seven others from the sea. Yet survival came with lifelong emotional scars, as he carried painful memories he was rarely allowed to share. After Nakajima’s passing, his grandson, actor Sota Judai, embarks on a deeply personal journey to uncover the truth behind his grandfather’s experiences and better understand a chapter of history that remained hidden throughout much of his life. As the investigation unfolds, the documentary expands beyond Okinawa, drawing parallels with present-day Ukraine to illustrate that the suffering of civilians, especially children, continues wherever war exists. By connecting historical tragedy with modern conflict, the filmmakers emphasize that the consequences of war extend far beyond the battlefield and continue to shape families across generations. Combining interviews, historical photographs, archival materials, and contemporary footage, the documentary presents an emotional portrait of remembrance, resilience, and historical responsibility. Narration by acclaimed voice actress Mayumi Tanaka adds warmth and compassion to the storytelling, reinforcing the film’s message that remembering the past is essential to protecting the future. Rather than simply recounting history, All the Stars in the Sky becomes a heartfelt appeal for peace, urging audiences to preserve the memories of those lost while ensuring that similar tragedies are never forgotten or repeated.
