Directed by Tomoya Itabashi, How to Build a Secret Base is a touching drama that explores the child hidden inside every adult. Blending gentle humor with emotional reflection, the film tells the story of four lifelong friends who reconnect after the unexpected death of a childhood companion and decide to fulfill a dream they once shared decades earlier. The story begins when Sato, who has just turned fifty, suddenly dies alone in his small Tokyo apartment. His passing brings together former elementary school classmates Yamagami, Mitarai, Kudo, and Toyonaga, who have spent years living separate lives shaped by careers, families, and personal struggles. During their reunion after the funeral, the friends reminisce about their childhood before Kudo reveals an old notebook carefully preserved for decades. Inside are detailed sketches and plans for a secret base that Sato had dreamed of building when they were children. Inspired by this forgotten blueprint, the four men decide to honor their late friend by finally bringing his childhood vision to life. What begins as a seemingly childish project gradually becomes a meaningful journey of self-discovery. As they gather materials, revisit familiar forests, and build together with the enthusiasm of schoolboys, they slowly reconnect not only with each other but also with the dreams they abandoned while growing older. Yet adulthood refuses to disappear completely. Family responsibilities, work commitments, financial concerns, and practical limitations continually challenge their determination, forcing them to ask whether it is still possible to protect the imagination that once defined them. Strong performances from Tetsuman Hirosue, Takehiko Fujita, Kozo Sato, and Takao Morita create believable lifelong friendships filled with warmth, humor, and emotional sincerity.
