Geng Sheng was a refined young scholar raised in a respected family that valued education, integrity, and courtesy above all else. During one summer he moved temporarily into his family’s abandoned ancestral residence, a lonely estate that local villagers believed to be haunted. Strange sounds often echoed through its empty halls after sunset, causing most people to avoid the place entirely. Geng Sheng, however, dismissed such rumors and devoted his evenings to reading by candlelight. One peaceful night he heard gentle laughter drifting through the quiet courtyard. Curious, he stepped outside and encountered an extraordinarily graceful young woman dressed in elegant green robes. She introduced herself as Qing Feng. Her intelligence matched her remarkable beauty. She discussed poetry, music, painting, and philosophy with extraordinary insight, leaving the scholar deeply impressed. Their conversations soon developed into sincere affection. Eventually Qing Feng revealed the truth she could no longer conceal. She was not human but a fox spirit who had lived peacefully within the ancient estate for many years. Her family strictly forbade relationships between fox spirits and mortals, making their growing love impossible according to ancient tradition. Geng Sheng answered without hesitation that character mattered far more than appearance or origin. To him, kindness, honesty, and compassion determined true worth rather than race or species. Encouraged by his sincerity, Qing Feng continued visiting him beneath the moonlight, and their bond grew stronger with every meeting. Their happiness ended when elder fox spirits discovered the secret relationship. Furious that Qing Feng had broken ancestral rules, they ordered her to return immediately and forbade any further contact with the human world. Before leaving, Qing Feng tearfully entrusted Geng Sheng with a jade pendant as a symbol of her enduring devotion. Heartbroken but determined, Geng Sheng searched tirelessly for a way to reunite with her. A wise Taoist hermit eventually advised him that genuine love could never be achieved through magical power alone. Instead, he should cultivate virtue, help others selflessly, and allow destiny to unfold naturally. Following this guidance, Geng Sheng spent many years teaching children, caring for his parents, supporting neighbors in hardship, and earning widespread admiration through humble service. During one Mid-Autumn Festival, as he quietly admired the full moon, Qing Feng suddenly appeared before him once again. She revealed that the fox elders had secretly observed his conduct throughout the years. They discovered that he had remained faithful without resentment, selfishness, or bitterness. Convinced of his unwavering integrity, they finally granted permission for the couple to remain together. Qing Feng left her fox clan and married Geng Sheng, embracing a peaceful life among ordinary people. She quietly used her supernatural abilities to protect villagers from disasters while never seeking praise or recognition. Although no one suspected her true identity, everyone admired her generosity and compassion. The couple lived together in lasting happiness, becoming legends celebrated for their enduring love and mutual devotion. Some believed they eventually ascended together into immortality, while others claimed they withdrew into distant mountains to continue blessing those who loved sincerely. Through “Qing Feng,” Pu Songling transforms the fox spirit from a figure of fear into a symbol of loyalty, kindness, and emotional sincerity.
