Hidden among towering mountains stood a quiet village where generations believed in the Eagle-Tiger Deity, a celestial guardian who protected both the people and the surrounding wilderness. Elders often told children that whenever danger threatened the land, the roar of a mighty tiger and the cry of a soaring eagle would echo through the valleys, announcing the deity’s presence. Inspired by these beliefs, villagers hunted only when necessary, respected the forests, and lived in harmony with the natural world. For many years, prosperity followed this balance. Everything changed when ambitious merchants discovered the region’s valuable timber and rare wildlife. Driven by profit, they recruited hunters and woodcutters who rapidly stripped the forests, trapped countless animals, and even set fires to force creatures from their hiding places. Rivers began to dry, birds disappeared from the skies, and fertile valleys slowly withered beneath relentless destruction. Village elders repeatedly warned the outsiders that greed would awaken the mountain’s guardian, yet the merchants mocked every warning, dismissing the ancient legend as mere superstition. One stormy night, violent winds swept across the mountains as thunder shook the valleys. Suddenly, an immense tiger’s roar merged with the piercing cry of a great eagle. Upon a towering cliff appeared a radiant warrior clothed in celestial armor, holding a gleaming spear while majestic images of an eagle and tiger stood behind him like divine spirits. His gaze carried overwhelming authority, yet instead of immediate punishment, he offered the invaders one final opportunity to abandon their greed. Blinded by arrogance, they answered with arrows aimed directly at the heavenly figure. Before the arrows reached their target, fierce winds shattered every weapon. The earth trembled violently, rocks crashed from the cliffs, and thick mist swallowed the terrified intruders. No matter which direction they fled, the mountain offered no escape. Only after they sincerely confessed their wrongdoing, promised to restore the forests, and returned stolen lands did the supernatural fog slowly disappear. Ashamed of their actions, the merchants departed forever. The villagers replanted countless trees, protected wildlife once more, and gradually watched the mountains recover their former beauty. Eagles again circled the highest peaks, while distant tiger calls occasionally echoed across the valleys at dawn. To the villagers, these sounds confirmed that the Eagle-Tiger Deity continued guarding the land. Many years later, a traveling scholar visited the village and asked whether anyone had truly seen the divine guardian. An elderly villager smiled gently before replying that if people believed gods lived only inside temples, they might forget their responsibilities once they stepped outside. But if they believed the guardian lived within every respectful heart, both humanity and nature could flourish together forever. Deeply moved, the scholar carefully recorded the legend for future generations. Through this remarkable tale, Pu Songling transforms the Eagle-Tiger Deity into a powerful symbol of balance between human ambition and the natural world. The story reminds readers that the greatest miracle is not supernatural power itself but humanity’s willingness to protect the living world.
