English Version:
The rise of 24-hour news channels emerged from the intersection of technological advancement and intense media competition. In the early years of television, news programs were broadcast only at scheduled times, meaning audiences had to wait for evening reports to learn about major events. This model worked in an era when information traveled slowly, but the expansion of satellite communication and cable television created opportunities for faster and more continuous coverage. The major turning point came in 1980 with the launch of CNN, founded by media entrepreneur Ted Turner. CNN introduced the revolutionary concept of broadcasting news around the clock, breaking away from the traditional format of limited daily bulletins. At the time, many critics doubted whether enough news existed to sustain a full-day channel. However, CNN developed a new style of journalism built on live reporting, real-time updates, and global correspondents. The Gulf War in 1991 became a defining moment for 24-hour news, as audiences around the world watched military operations unfold live on television. For the first time, viewers experienced major world events as they happened, fundamentally changing expectations of news media. Real-time coverage soon became the standard for global journalism. Following CNN’s success, many countries launched their own continuous news networks, rapidly expanding the influence of round-the-clock broadcasting. Politics, financial markets, natural disasters, and entertainment could now be reported instantly, creating a constant flow of information. Competition between networks also accelerated innovations in visual presentation, anchor styles, and live analysis. At the same time, the demand for nonstop content introduced challenges. Some networks relied heavily on repeated coverage, sensationalism, or rapid reporting at the expense of deeper analysis. The constant stream of breaking news also contributed to growing audience anxiety and information overload. Despite these criticisms, 24-hour news channels fundamentally reshaped modern society. People no longer wait passively for updates but expect immediate access to global events at any moment. From scheduled broadcasts to continuous live coverage, the development of 24-hour news transformed journalism, accelerated globalization, and became a defining feature of the information age.
