The peaceful path wound through trees before opening onto calm water that reflected the blue summer sky like polished glass. Flora delighted in gathering wildflowers before placing a small wooden boat onto the gentle current, smiling as it drifted across the lake. Watching the child at play, the governess allowed herself to believe that perhaps the strange encounter on the tower truly had been an isolated incident. Then she looked across the water. Standing silently on the opposite shore was a woman dressed entirely in black. Her pale face appeared almost lifeless beneath the dark clothing, and her eyes never left Flora for a single moment. She neither waved nor called out. She simply stood there, perfectly still, as though she had been waiting for them to arrive. A cold wave of fear swept through the governess.
