English Version The name Peter Quint lingered in the governess's thoughts long after Mrs. Grose revealed that the mysterious man had died years before. She tried to convince herself there must be a reasonable explanation, yet every quiet hallway, every silent staircase, and every shadow stretching across Bly Manor seemed to remind her of the figure watching from the tower. Curiously, nothing about the children's behavior suggested fear. Flora continued laughing among the flowers while Miles spent his days reading, practicing the piano, and speaking with a grace uncommon for a boy his age. Their happiness should have reassured her, but instead it deepened her unease. One bright afternoon, Flora suggested walking to the lake. The peaceful path wound through trees before opening onto calm water that reflected the blue summer sky like polished glass. Flora delighted in gathering wildflowers before placing a small wooden boat onto the gentle current, smiling as it drifted across the lake. Watching the child at play, the governess allowed herself to believe that perhaps the strange encounter on the tower truly had been an isolated incident. Then she looked across the water. Standing silently on the opposite shore was a woman dressed entirely in black. Her pale face appeared almost lifeless beneath the dark clothing, and her eyes never left Flora for a single moment. She neither waved nor called out. She simply stood there, perfectly still, as though she had been waiting for them to arrive. A cold wave of fear swept through the governess. The woman did not resemble anyone employed at the estate or living in the nearby village. There was something profoundly sorrowful about her, a loneliness that seemed almost supernatural. The governess instinctively turned toward Flora, expecting the little girl to react. Instead, Flora continued playing with her tiny boat, laughing softly as though no one else existed. Not once did she glance toward the opposite bank. The governess could not decide which possibility frightened her more—that Flora truly saw nothing, or that she deliberately pretended not to notice. Looking back across the lake, the woman remained motionless, her gaze fixed entirely upon the child. Unlike Peter Quint's commanding stare, hers carried overwhelming sadness rather than menace, yet somehow that silent grief felt even more disturbing. Without another moment's hesitation, the governess gathered Flora into her arms and hurried back toward the manor. The little girl asked innocently why they were leaving so suddenly, but no explanation came. Once safely inside Bly, the governess described everything she had witnessed to Mrs. Grose. As the description unfolded, the housekeeper's expression slowly collapsed into silent horror. Finally, she whispered another forgotten name—Miss Jessel. She had been the previous governess, admired for her intelligence, beauty, and gentle nature. But like Peter Quint, she too had died. Rumors had long connected the two, though no servant ever dared discuss their relationship openly. Since Miss Jessel's death, her memory had faded into uneasy silence, as though the household wished to erase her existence completely. The revelation left the governess shaken. She had not simply encountered another stranger. She had seen someone who belonged among the dead. Even more troubling was one undeniable detail. Throughout the entire encounter, Miss Jessel had never once looked at the governess. Her attention had remained fixed entirely upon Flora. That realization transformed fear into something far more dangerous. If Peter Quint had returned for Miles, and Miss Jessel had returned for Flora, then perhaps their appearances were not random hauntings at all. Perhaps the spirits had come back with a purpose. As darkness settled over Bly once again, the governess sat awake beside her window, unable to silence the terrible question growing inside her mind. What if the children had never truly been alone? What if the dead had never stopped watching them at all?
