September 12 in History|From the Lascaux Cave Paintings and Luna 2 to the First African American Woman in Space

2026-09-12

September 12 connects prehistoric art, wartime upheaval, the Space Race and human achievement, tracing exploration from ancient caves to outer space.

English Version

September 12 offers a remarkable journey through human history, connecting prehistoric art, wartime politics, the Cold War, lunar exploration and the continuing expansion of human presence in space. One of the most extraordinary events associated with the date occurred in 1940, when the famous prehistoric paintings of Lascaux in southwestern France were discovered. Near the town of Montignac, several teenagers exploring the area followed their dog into a cave and unexpectedly encountered a vast collection of paintings on the walls. The artwork depicts animals including horses, deer and aurochs, together with a variety of signs and symbols. The paintings are approximately 17,000 years old and represent one of the most important surviving examples of Upper Palaeolithic art. Their discovery offered modern people an extraordinary connection with prehistoric society, demonstrating that ancient humans were capable not only of survival but also of sophisticated observation, symbolic thought and artistic expression. Lascaux eventually became one of the world’s best-known prehistoric sites, but the original cave had to be protected from the damage caused by visitors, humidity, carbon dioxide and microorganisms. Reproductions were therefore created so that the public could experience the paintings without putting the originals at risk. Lascaux consequently became an important lesson not only in archaeology but also in the preservation of cultural heritage. September 12 also connects with one of the important intellectual developments that eventually transformed modern science. In 1933, physicist Leó Szilárd conceived the idea of a nuclear chain reaction while walking through London. He realised that if one nuclear reaction could release more than one neutron, and those neutrons could trigger further reactions, a self-sustaining chain could theoretically develop. The idea later became an important foundation for nuclear physics and nuclear energy, while also contributing to the scientific understanding that ultimately made nuclear weapons possible. Szilárd’s story is a reminder that major scientific developments can sometimes begin with a sudden insight that later requires years of experimentation, engineering and theoretical work before its full implications become clear. On September 12, 1943, the Second World War produced one of its most famous special operations. Italian dictator Benito Mussolini had been imprisoned after the fall of his government, but Adolf Hitler ordered German forces to rescue him. German paratroopers and special forces, including units associated with Otto Skorzeny, launched a daring glider assault on a mountain resort at Gran Sasso in central Italy. The operation succeeded in freeing Mussolini and became one of the most celebrated commando missions of the war. Mussolini was taken to Germany and later returned to northern Italy, where he became the nominal leader of the Italian Social Republic under German protection. His rescue occurred during one of the most chaotic periods of the Italian campaign. After Italy signed an armistice with the Allies, German forces rapidly occupied large parts of the country, while Italy became a major battlefield between German and Allied troops. September 12, 1953, brought two events that would shape the politics and culture of the Cold War era. In Newport, Rhode Island, U.S. Senator John F. Kennedy married Jacqueline Bouvier in a wedding that attracted enormous public attention. Kennedy was still a senator at the time, but seven years later he would become the youngest elected U.S. president, while Jacqueline Kennedy became one of the most recognisable First Ladies in American history. Their marriage eventually became closely associated with the public image of the Kennedy presidency and American popular culture. On the same date, Nikita Khrushchev was announced as the new First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Six months after Joseph Stalin’s death, the Soviet leadership was undergoing a major internal power struggle. Khrushchev gradually emerged as the dominant figure and later became associated with de-Stalinisation, including criticism of Stalin’s personality cult and some aspects of political repression. His period of leadership also included some of the most dangerous moments of the Cold War, including the Cuban Missile Crisis, while the United States and Soviet Union competed intensely in science, technology and space exploration. On September 12, 1959, the Soviet Union launched Luna 2, opening another chapter in the history of human exploration. The spacecraft successfully travelled to the Moon and deliberately impacted its surface on September 14, becoming the first human-made object to reach another celestial body. The achievement was a major symbolic victory during the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States. Luna 2 did not land softly. Instead, it was designed to collide with the lunar surface, carrying scientific instruments that studied radiation, magnetic fields and the space environment near the Moon. The European Space Agency confirms that Luna 2 launched on September 12 and reached the lunar surface two days later, becoming the first human-made object to make contact with another celestial body.  Its significance went far beyond the mission itself. Luna 2 demonstrated that humanity could build a machine capable of escaping Earth, travelling through space and reaching another world. It helped establish the technological foundation for later lunar orbiters, landing missions, sample-return missions and eventually robotic exploration of Mars and the outer Solar System. Three years later, on September 12, 1962, U.S. President John F. Kennedy delivered one of the most famous speeches in the history of space exploration at Rice University in Houston. He reaffirmed the American goal of sending a human to the Moon and returning that person safely to Earth before the end of the decade. The speech transformed the Moon landing from an abstract ambition into a national engineering and scientific objective. Kennedy’s challenge became one of the central political forces behind the Apollo programme. On September 12, 1970, the Soviet Union launched Luna 16, taking lunar exploration another step forward. Unlike Luna 2, Luna 16 was designed to land softly on the Moon, collect soil and return the sample to Earth. It successfully completed that mission, becoming the first robotic spacecraft to return lunar material to Earth. The achievement demonstrated that lunar exploration was no longer simply about reaching the Moon; spacecraft could now land, operate and bring scientific material home for detailed study.  September 12, 1974, brought a major political transformation in Africa. Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia was overthrown in a military coup led by the Derg. His removal ended a long period of imperial rule and opened a turbulent era of military government and political upheaval. Haile Selassie had ruled Ethiopia for decades and had become an internationally recognised symbol of African sovereignty. He also acquired a distinctive cultural and religious significance through the Rastafari movement in Jamaica and elsewhere. In 1988, September 12 was marked by one of the most destructive hurricanes of the late twentieth century. Hurricane Gilbert struck Jamaica with devastating winds and rainfall before continuing toward Mexico and eventually affecting parts of the United States. The storm caused extensive destruction and loss of life, demonstrating once again how tropical cyclones can affect entire regions rather than a single location. Its impact highlighted the importance of emergency planning, infrastructure and international disaster response in regions vulnerable to major storms.September 12, 1992, brought another historic breakthrough in space exploration. Mae Jemison travelled into space aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on mission STS-47, becoming the first African American woman in space. Jemison was a physician who had also served in the Peace Corps before joining NASA. During the mission, she participated in scientific experiments and spent more than 190 hours in orbit.  Jemison’s achievement mattered for more than the record itself. Her presence in space expanded the public image of who could become an astronaut and became an important source of inspiration for young people, particularly African American women interested in science, medicine and engineering. Her story also provides an interesting contrast with the early Space Race. The first stage of space exploration was dominated by competition between nations, while later generations increasingly focused on widening participation and representation among the individuals who travelled beyond Earth. On September 12, 2013, NASA announced that Voyager 1 had entered interstellar space, becoming the first human-made spacecraft to cross beyond the heliosphere and enter the space between stars. Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 had originally been designed to study the outer planets, particularly Jupiter and Saturn. After completing its main planetary mission, it continued travelling outward and eventually became one of humanity’s most distant ambassadors. From the paintings of Lascaux to Voyager 1, September 12 appears to carry a powerful theme of exploration. Prehistoric humans used pigments to record what they saw and perhaps what they believed. Scientists later explored the structure of matter and the possibilities of nuclear reactions. During the Cold War, competing superpowers sent machines toward the Moon. Mae Jemison carried human presence into orbit, while Voyager 1 eventually travelled beyond the Sun’s immediate sphere of influence. The scale of exploration kept expanding: from a cave, to the landscape of Earth, from Earth to the Moon, and from the Moon toward the distant boundary of the Solar System. September 12 is therefore more than a collection of unrelated historical anniversaries. It can be read as a story of humanity moving from observation to understanding, from reaching a destination to pushing beyond it. The ancient artists of Lascaux could never have imagined a spacecraft travelling between the stars, yet both achievements came from the same basic human instinct: curiosity. People continue to look at what is unknown and ask what lies beyond it. Whether the frontier is a dark cave, the microscopic world of nuclear physics, the surface of the Moon or the space between stars, the desire to explore remains one of the most persistent forces in human history. That is what makes September 12 such a meaningful date to remember: it shows how far humanity has travelled, while also reminding us that there are always new frontiers waiting beyond what we already know.
