《薑男孩》由田中未來執導，是他於日本電影、戲劇與表演藝術專門學校「ENBU Seminar」完成的畢業作品。影片沒有刻意安排戲劇化衝突，而是透過兩位多年好友重新同住的日常生活，細膩描寫友情在歲月流逝中的微妙變化，以及成年人在人生不同道路上逐漸產生的距離感。
故事主角岸田是一名任職於地方銀行的業務員，過著穩定而規律的生活。某天，公司因東京總部出現人力空缺，臨時決定將他調往東京工作。由於調職通知來得過於突然，公司尚未安排住宿，使他不得不暫時借住在高中時代好友倉的住處。
倉與岸田的人生發展截然不同。岸田選擇穩定的職業道路，而倉則留在東京，以自由工作者的身分生活。多年未見的兩人重新開始共同生活，看似找回昔日友情，卻逐漸發現彼此早已不是學生時代熟悉的模樣。
個性內向、喜歡獨處的岸田，開始因倉隨性而熱鬧的生活方式感到疲憊；而倉則依舊維持自由自在的生活節奏，難以理解好友日益沉默的情緒。沒有激烈的爭吵，也沒有重大的誤會，兩人的距離卻在日復一日的生活中慢慢拉開。

Directed by Mirai Tanaka, Ginger Boy was created as a graduation film at ENBU Seminar, one of Japan’s respected schools for filmmaking, theatre, and actor training. Through an understated and deeply personal narrative, the film examines how close friendships inevitably change as people grow older and follow different paths in life.
The story centers on Kishida, a sales representative working for a regional bank. His predictable routine is suddenly interrupted when he is unexpectedly transferred to the company’s Tokyo headquarters. Because the relocation happens without warning, temporary housing cannot be arranged in time, forcing him to stay with his high school friend Kura, who now lives in Tokyo as a part-time worker.
Although the two friends once shared countless memories, adulthood has transformed them into very different people. Kishida values order, stability, and solitude, while Kura embraces a freer and less structured lifestyle. As they begin living together again, the excitement of reunion gradually gives way to subtle emotional distance.
Rather than relying on dramatic confrontations, the film reveals how everyday routines slowly expose the differences that have developed over the years. Small misunderstandings, contrasting personalities, and changing priorities quietly reshape their friendship, illustrating that relationships can drift apart without anyone intending to let go.
Mirai Tanaka directs with remarkable restraint, capturing ordinary conversations and intimate domestic moments with honesty and sensitivity. The confined Tokyo apartment becomes a symbolic space where memories of youth collide with the realities of adulthood, while silence often communicates more than dialogue.
Despite being a graduation project, Ginger Boy received significant recognition on both the Japanese and international festival circuit. It screened at the 25th TAMA NEW WAVE, MOOSIC LAB 2025, and was selected for La Cinef at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, a prestigious competition showcasing outstanding works by emerging filmmakers from film schools around the world. The film ultimately earned Third Prize, marking an impressive international achievement for its young director.
Rather than telling a story about friendship ending, Ginger Boy reflects on how time naturally reshapes human relationships. Through its quiet realism and emotional honesty, the film gently reminds audiences that growing apart does not necessarily erase the value of the memories people once shared.
