Dark clouds gathered over Bly Manor long before sunset. The wind bent the ancient trees while distant thunder rolled across the countryside. Rain soon began striking the old windows, wrapping the estate in an atmosphere of growing dread. Standing alone beside the glass, the governess felt an overwhelming certainty that this night would decide everything. She could no longer wait for another apparition. If Peter Quint and Miss Jessel continued returning for the children, she had only one choice—to face them directly. Near midnight, the manor fell silent as every servant retired to bed. Carrying a single candle, the governess walked alone through the dim corridors. Cold drafts swept through the hallways, causing the candlelight to dance across the walls in strange and shifting shapes. Her destination was the tower where she had first seen Peter Quint. As she climbed the final stone steps, the familiar figure emerged once again. Quint stood exactly where he had before, dressed in dark clothing, his expression colder than ever. He neither spoke nor moved toward her. Gathering every ounce of courage, the governess demanded to know why he continued pursuing the children. The only reply came from the howling wind. Slowly, Quint raised one hand and pointed toward the distant lake. Turning in that direction, she saw another figure standing silently along the shore. Miss Jessel waited beneath the pouring rain, dressed in black as though she had never left that place. Without hesitation the governess rushed down the tower and ran through the storm. Rain blurred her vision while mud slowed every step, yet she refused to stop. When she finally reached the lakeside, she froze. Flora stood only a short distance away, facing Miss Jessel with her back toward the governess. The little girl remained completely motionless. Calling Flora’s name produced no response. At that very instant, a flash of lightning illuminated the entire shoreline. The ghost vanished instantly, leaving Flora standing alone beside the water. As the child slowly turned around, tears filled her eyes, though she spoke not a single word. The governess embraced her tightly and hurried back toward the manor. Deeply shaken by what had happened, Mrs. Grose decided to leave Bly immediately with Flora, taking the girl somewhere far from the estate until the danger had passed. Before dawn, only the governess and Miles remained inside the great house. The storm continued outside as she found the boy sitting quietly beside a window, gazing into the darkness. His expression suggested that he had expected this night all along. Softly he asked, “Has she gone?” The governess answered only with silence before sitting beside him. After several long minutes, she finally asked the question she had carried in her heart for weeks. “Miles… have you truly seen Peter Quint?” The boy lowered his head. His hands tightened together as though struggling against something invisible. Before he could answer, a violent crash of thunder shook the manor, extinguishing every candle in the room. Darkness swallowed everything. Through the rain-covered window, the governess believed she saw Peter Quint standing outside once more, staring directly at Miles. Without thinking, she stepped between them, shielding the boy with her own body. Whether she was protecting him from a ghost or from the terrifying power of her own imagination no longer mattered. She understood only one thing. By sunrise, the mystery of Bly Manor would finally reach its end.
