Illumination takes place in a fractured version of Japan in 2019, where the nation has been divided into north and south following political collapse and ongoing conflict. Northern Japan has become a war zone filled with violence and instability, while the southern regions attempt to preserve normal life despite the growing tension surrounding them. Beneath the appearance of peace, however, society is quietly deteriorating. Young people drift through empty routines without hope, purpose, or emotional direction. The film follows Yosuke, an eighteen-year-old boy emotionally numbed by the disappearance of his childhood friend Kurata, who became involved with northern military conflict as a deserter. Yosuke moves through the city with a detached sense of existence, surrounded by decaying urban spaces and emotionally disconnected people. The film establishes an atmosphere of quiet social collapse almost immediately, portraying a world where emotional exhaustion has become permanent. Everything changes when Yosuke meets Kikuchi at a game arcade and learns about a mysterious underground drug called “Illumination.” The substance is rumored to allow users to travel through time, though the film intentionally avoids explaining whether the experience is scientifically real, psychological, or entirely hallucinatory. Instead, the drug functions as a metaphor for escape — an attempt to flee unbearable reality and reconnect with emotions buried beneath fear and emptiness. Through Kikuchi, Yosuke enters a hidden subculture of underground drug parties populated by lost young people searching for meaning in a collapsing society. There he encounters Teru, an idealistic dealer who speaks about freedom and altered consciousness, as well as Miki, a quiet classmate who expresses herself through drawing and art. Each character carries emotional scars and unresolved loneliness, creating a fragile sense of community among people who feel abandoned by the future.
