Today in History, August 21 | The Mona Lisa Is Stolen and Becomes a Global Icon

2026-08-21

On August 21, 1911, Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa disappeared from the Louvre in Paris. At first, museum staff believed the painting might simply have been removed for photography or conservation. It was soon discovered that the masterpiece had actually been stolen. Recovered two years later in Florence, the theft helped transform the painting into one of the most famous works of art in the world.

Peruggia

English Version

Today, almost everyone knows the Mona Lisa.

Leonardo da Vinci’s mysterious portrait has become one of the most recognisable works of art in the world.

But there is an intriguing question:

Would the Mona Lisa be as famous today if it had never been stolen in 1911?

On August 21, 1911, the painting disappeared from the Louvre in Paris.

The theft became one of the most famous art crimes in history, and it helped transform the painting from a celebrated Renaissance work into a global cultural icon.

At the time, the Mona Lisa was certainly respected by the art world.

Leonardo da Vinci was already recognised as a major Renaissance artist.

But the painting was not yet the worldwide celebrity that it is today.

The theft changed that.

On the morning of August 21, 1911, Vincenzo Peruggia entered the Louvre.

He was a former museum employee who had worked with frames and protective glass.

Because he was familiar with the building, he was able to remove the painting from the wall and conceal it beneath his clothing.

The remarkable part was that the theft was not immediately discovered.

At the time, paintings could be temporarily removed for photography, conservation or other work.

So when the Mona Lisa disappeared from its usual place, staff did not immediately realise that a crime had taken place.

It was only later that the museum understood that the masterpiece had actually been stolen.

The investigation quickly became a major news story.

The Louvre was searched.

Police investigated the museum and questioned possible suspects.

The story spread through newspapers across France and then around the world.

Suddenly, millions of people who had never paid much attention to Renaissance art were hearing about Leonardo’s mysterious portrait.

The painting had become international news.

And this is one of the most fascinating parts of the story:

the Mona Lisa became dramatically more famous after she disappeared.

Newspapers reported the investigation.

People asked where the painting was.

Who had taken it?

Why?

Could it ever be recovered?

Some theories became surprisingly dramatic.

French poet Guillaume Apollinaire was investigated and arrested in connection with another art theft, and Pablo Picasso was also questioned because of his association with Apollinaire.

Neither man was responsible for stealing the Mona Lisa.

The mystery continued for more than two years.

Then, in 1913, the painting resurfaced in Florence.

Peruggia contacted an Italian art dealer and claimed that he had the Mona Lisa.

He reportedly believed that the painting should be returned to Italy because Leonardo da Vinci had been Italian.

Instead, the attempt to return the painting exposed him.

Peruggia was arrested, and the Mona Lisa was recovered.

The recovery became another international news event.

The painting had disappeared as an important work of Renaissance art.

It returned as something much bigger:

a global celebrity.

The theft had transformed the public’s relationship with the painting.

People were now fascinated not only by Leonardo’s technique but also by the mystery surrounding the portrait.

Why was the smile so famous?

Why had someone stolen it?

Where had it been?

Would it ever be seen again?

The story itself became part of the painting’s identity.

Today, visitors to the Louvre often make the Mona Lisa one of their first destinations.

The painting is actually smaller than many people expect.

Yet thousands of visitors gather in front of it.

They take photographs.

They wait for a better view.

Some simply want to say:

“I have seen the Mona Lisa.”

That modern phenomenon is partly connected to the extraordinary publicity created by the 1911 theft.

Of course, the painting is famous for reasons far beyond the theft.

It is an important work by Leonardo da Vinci and a major example of Renaissance art.

But the 1911 crime gave it a completely different kind of public fame.

The U.S. Library of Congress notes that the theft and the enormous amount of newspaper coverage that followed helped make the Mona Lisa internationally famous.

The story therefore gives us an interesting lesson about history.

Sometimes an event produces consequences that nobody expects.

Peruggia may have wanted to return the painting to Italy.

But instead, his actions helped make the painting famous throughout the world.

His plan created an outcome far beyond anything he could have imagined.

That is what makes August 21, 1911, such an interesting date.

The story is not simply:

“Someone stole a painting.”

The real story is:

“How did the theft of a painting help turn it into a global icon?”

On that morning, the Mona Lisa disappeared from the wall of the Louvre.

Two years later, she returned.

But when she came back,

she was no longer simply the Mona Lisa that had disappeared.

She had become the Mona Lisa known by people around the world.
