Hidden among cliffs and endless fog, the stone house had long been feared by the people living far beyond the hills. Strange sounds were said to echo from its walls after sunset, and travelers whispered about dark figures staring from its windows. As the two men ventured deeper into the wilderness, they slowly realized the house carried a presence older and far more unsettling than abandonment itself.

Night settled fully over the wasteland, and with it came a silence so heavy that even breathing felt unnatural. Outside the stone house, thick fog rolled upward from the immense chasm below the cliffs, swallowing the landscape piece by piece until the world beyond the windows vanished entirely. Inside, the two travelers remained frozen in the dim corridor, unable to forget the strange dragging sound they had heard above them moments earlier. What had first seemed like an abandoned ruin now felt disturbingly alive. The older traveler finally muttered that they should leave immediately and wait until morning before returning. Yet when they reached the entrance hall, both men stopped in shock. The massive wooden door that had stood partly open earlier was now completely shut. They pushed against it together, but the ancient wood barely moved. It felt as though something on the opposite side held it firmly in place. Unease slowly turned into fear. With no choice left, they lifted their lantern and began searching deeper into the house for another exit. The further they wandered, the stranger the building became. From outside, the stone house appeared narrow and isolated, but inside it stretched into endless corridors and forgotten chambers. Several rooms had collapsed long ago, their floors buried beneath fallen beams and centuries of dust. Yet scattered among the decay were signs that something still moved through the house. Long marks scarred the wooden floors, as though heavy objects had been dragged repeatedly through the corridors over many years. Certain walls bore crude symbols scratched deeply into the stone. The carvings resembled neither language nor decoration. Instead, they carried the unsettling appearance of ritual markings created for purposes long forgotten. As the men descended a narrow stairway toward the lower level, a sound suddenly drifted through the silence. A bell. Slow. Distant. Hollow. Both travelers froze immediately. There were no villages for miles across the wilderness, no churches hidden among the cliffs. Yet the bell continued ringing faintly somewhere beyond the fog outside. Extinguishing their lantern, they moved cautiously toward a cracked window. Beyond the glass stretched only darkness and swirling mist, but the sound lingered across the valley like a forgotten signal from another world. The younger traveler remembered hearing stories earlier that day from an old man at a roadside inn. Decades ago, several shepherds had disappeared near these cliffs after wandering too close to the ravine. Those who searched for them claimed strange figures could sometimes be seen moving through the fog at night. Some resembled wandering people, while others appeared impossibly tall and distorted. Eventually the nearby villagers abandoned the region entirely and began referring to it only by a fearful name — the place no one approached. The bell gradually faded into silence. Then another sound emerged above them. Footsteps. Slow and deliberate. Unlike before, there was no dragging now. Something was walking across the upper floor. Each step echoed clearly through the old house. The travelers stared toward the staircase, barely daring to breathe. At the edge of the second-floor corridor, a dark shape slowly emerged from the shadows. It was unnaturally tall, its outline twisted and difficult to understand beneath the darkness. For several long seconds the figure remained motionless, watching them from above. Then, without warning, it stepped backward and vanished once more into the unseen depths of the house. Neither man spoke afterward. Deep inside, both already understood the terrible truth — whatever inhabited the stone house had become aware of them.
