English Version
A gentle afternoon breeze moved slowly through the valley, passing between the bamboo, crossing the stream, and lifting the thin curtains beside the garden windows. After a light rain, the Grand View Garden seemed quieter than ever. The stone paths still carried a soft sheen of moisture, tiny drops rested upon the flowers, and distant birds occasionally broke the silence before disappearing into the trees. Baoyu walked alone beside the water, without a destination and without any desire to hurry. For once, he simply wanted to be still. Throughout his younger years, he had searched for answers in other people. Whenever something happened, he wanted to understand why. Whenever someone left, he wondered whether they would return. Whenever he lost something precious, he questioned fate and wished to know why life had chosen such a difficult path. After so many years, however, he had begun to understand that not everything in life comes with an answer. Some questions must be carried for a while, and some roads must be travelled alone before their meaning becomes clear. Beneath an old willow tree, he stopped and watched its branches move gently in the wind. He remembered the younger version of himself who feared loneliness and always wanted someone nearby to share every uncertainty. Yet standing there alone, he discovered something he had never fully understood before. Being alone did not necessarily mean being lonely. True loneliness could exist even in a crowded room when a person no longer understood their own heart. Real freedom, on the other hand, could be found when someone was able to stand alone and still feel at peace with their choices. Baoyu continued along the stream. A few fallen leaves lifted from the ground, turned slowly in the air, and settled again upon the earth. Watching them, he realized that life sometimes requires us to leave familiar places before we can discover another direction. Departure does not always mean loss, and walking alone does not always mean being abandoned. As long as there is still a small light within the heart, even the sound of one’s own footsteps can be enough to continue moving forward. Elsewhere, Daiyu sat quietly inside a pavilion with a book resting in her hands. She had been looking at the same page for some time without turning it. Outside, bamboo shadows moved gently across the courtyard, reminding her of the many futures she had once imagined and the things she had once tried desperately to hold onto because she feared losing them. Now she no longer needed the approval of others to prove that her life had value. She had begun to understand that what truly matters is knowing what we treasure and deciding what kind of person we wish to become. Once she believed that peace could only come from being understood by someone else. Now she realized that the most important understanding must begin within. A person becomes free when they can accept their imperfections, acknowledge their mistakes, and make peace with the parts of the past that can never be changed. A soft breeze entered the pavilion and turned the pages of her book before carrying a fallen blossom across the table. Daiyu reached out and caught it gently. Looking at the fragile petal resting in her palm, she smiled. Flowers bloom in their season and fall when their season is over. Human lives follow a similar rhythm. No moment can remain forever, and no person can accompany another through every road and every season. In the end, the one companion who remains throughout the entire journey is the self. By evening, Baoyu returned to the garden while Daiyu stepped quietly out of the pavilion. They met beneath the long corridor and did not immediately speak. The wind moved softly between them, carrying the faint fragrance of flowers from somewhere beyond the courtyard. After a moment, Baoyu said, “Sometimes we travel a very long way before realizing that what we were truly searching for was ourselves.” Daiyu smiled gently. “Perhaps we can only know where to go after we learn who we are.” Neither felt the need to say more. Some answers become clear without explanation. The sun slowly disappeared behind the mountains, leaving one final band of light across the lake. The water shimmered gently beneath the evening breeze. Standing together beside the shore, Baoyu and Daiyu looked toward the darkening horizon. They knew the future would still contain unfamiliar roads and perhaps new farewells, yet neither felt the same fear as before. They had finally understood that life is not about waiting for another person to complete us. It is about becoming whole through the long process of living, learning, losing, and beginning again. The breeze returned across the willow bank, carrying fallen leaves away and bringing with it the fresh scent of distant trees and grass. Baoyu looked toward the open sky and felt a calmness deeper than anything he had known before. The future might not unfold according to his wishes, but that no longer frightened him. If he could trust himself, accept his choices, and find his direction again whenever he became lost, then every step would still have meaning. Daiyu watched the darkening water and understood that companionship does not always require another person standing beside us. Sometimes the simple decision to remain beside ourselves is enough. Life contains meetings and separations, gains and losses, crowded roads and quiet ones. Eventually every person must learn how to travel alongside their own heart. The breeze continued moving gently through the garden as night descended and silence returned. Baoyu and Daiyu eventually followed their separate paths, yet neither felt alone. They had learned to trust themselves without applause, to continue without immediate answers, and to hold their own hands gently when no one else was there. The breeze came softly, and time remained silent. Perhaps true maturity begins at precisely this moment—not when we stop needing others, but when we stop being afraid of walking alone, stop searching for someone to rescue us, and learn instead to walk beside ourselves with patience, courage, and quiet hope toward the morning still waiting ahead.
