Adapted Storiesdream of the red chamber

Chapter 70|Spring’s Last Breath: The Tenderness Before Farewell

2026-07-03

Spring will always come to an end, and blossoms will eventually fade. What truly matters is not preventing farewells, but whether we have shared our days with sincerity before the season quietly slips away.

English Version
The final blossoms of spring drifted gently through the quiet courtyard as a warm breeze hinted that summer was already approaching. Fresh green leaves had begun replacing delicate flowers, yet the fragrance of spring still lingered softly in the air, reluctant to disappear completely. Walking beneath the familiar corridors, Baoyu felt an unexpected calm settle within him. Watching the changing garden, he realized that the most precious seasons of life often fade without announcing their departure. When he was younger, he believed happiness could be preserved simply by wishing it to remain. He wanted every joyful meeting to last forever and every beautiful day to stay unchanged. Time had taught him otherwise. It was precisely because every season must end that each shared moment carried such extraordinary value. As petals floated quietly toward the ground, he thought about all the people who had walked beside him. Some had continued toward distant horizons, while others still remained nearby. Regardless of where life had carried them, every encounter had left something lasting inside his heart. Their laughter, silence, misunderstandings, forgiveness, and kindness had all become gentle memories that no longer caused sorrow, only gratitude. From her window, Daiyu gazed toward the last blossoms still clinging to the branches. Surprisingly, she felt no sadness. She realized that flowers are not beautiful because they bloom forever, but because they give everything during the brief season they are alive. Human relationships are much the same. Their value is never measured by how long they endure, but by the sincerity shared while they exist. What matters most is whether people truly cared for one another during the journey they were fortunate enough to share. With that thought, a peaceful smile appeared upon her face. Even after spring disappeared, the memory of walking together beneath blooming trees would remain quietly within her heart through every future season. The afternoon light softened as clouds drifted above the lake and birds crossed the open sky. Baoyu and Daiyu happened to meet once again within the peaceful garden. They exchanged nothing more than quiet smiles, yet those silent greetings felt warmer than countless conversations from years before. Both understood that certain emotions no longer required explanation because they had already become part of each other’s lives. True maturity was no longer fearing farewell, but learning to treasure every ordinary day before parting arrived. Baoyu suddenly realized that life’s greatest kindness is not preventing separation, but allowing people to accompany one another sincerely until the moment their paths naturally divide. That quiet acceptance carried neither regret nor sorrow, only a gentle peace earned through time. Looking toward the trees slowly welcoming summer, Daiyu also felt hope growing within her heart. Every changing season promised another beginning, just as every farewell prepared the soul for future growth. Fate had never taken spring away. Instead, it transformed spring into memory so that its beauty could continue living through every season still to come. The final blossom landed softly upon the lake, drifting slowly across the rippling water. Spring remained gentle until its final breath, and beneath the bright afternoon sky, Baoyu and Daiyu finally learned that what truly endures is never the season itself, but the sincerity shared while it quietly blossomed.
