English Version
Back to Fukuyama is a mockumentary thriller that combines dark comedy, violent action, and social satire within the setting of a seemingly ordinary tourism campaign. The story follows veteran video director Shigeo Takahashi, who is hired to produce an official promotional film showcasing the attractions of Fukuyama City in Hiroshima Prefecture. Joined by rookie assistant director Maika Sugimoto and a small production crew, he begins what is expected to be a routine three-day location shoot highlighting local culture, historical landmarks, and scenic destinations. However, almost immediately after production begins, an unexpected accident leaves the city’s project coordinator unconscious, throwing the entire schedule into confusion. Afraid that the production will be canceled, Takahashi makes a reckless decision to conceal the truth by having his inexperienced assistant secretly impersonate the missing official. What begins as a desperate attempt to save the project quickly develops into a chain reaction of increasingly ridiculous disasters. Additional accidents occur one after another, including an incident involving the city’s beloved mascot performer, forcing the crew to invent ever more elaborate lies to keep filming alive. Every attempt to cover up the previous mistake only creates larger problems, gradually transforming the peaceful tourist destination into a scene of violent confrontations, injuries, and uncontrollable chaos. Presented through handheld cameras, behind-the-scenes footage, interviews, and documentary-style cinematography, the film blurs the boundary between fiction and reality, making its outrageous situations feel surprisingly believable. Beneath its exaggerated violence and absurd comedy lies a sharp critique of media production, public relations, image management, and the pressure to maintain appearances regardless of the consequences. As deception spirals beyond anyone’s control, every character becomes trapped inside an increasingly impossible situation where honesty arrives far too late. Balancing energetic pacing with satirical humor and unpredictable action, Back to Fukuyama delivers an entertaining blend of mockumentary filmmaking and thriller storytelling while exposing the fragile nature of carefully constructed public images.
