English Version
William the Conqueror, born around 1028 in Falaise, Normandy, entered the world under difficult circumstances as the illegitimate son of Duke Robert I. Despite early challenges to his legitimacy, he demonstrated remarkable determination and military skill, securing control of Normandy while still a young ruler. His greatest opportunity came after the death of King Edward the Confessor of England in 1066. Edward left no direct heir, creating a fierce succession dispute. William claimed that Edward had promised him the English crown, but Harold Godwinson was instead crowned king. Refusing to accept the decision, William assembled a powerful invasion force and crossed the English Channel. On October 14, 1066, his army confronted Harold’s forces at the Battle of Hastings. The decisive Norman victory, combined with Harold’s death on the battlefield, forever altered English history. Later that year, William was crowned King of England in Westminster Abbey, beginning the Norman dynasty. Once in power, William faced repeated rebellions and responded with decisive military campaigns to secure his authority. He ordered the construction of formidable stone castles across the kingdom, including the Tower of London, creating symbols of royal power and strategic centers of defense. He also redistributed land from Anglo-Saxon nobles to Norman supporters, establishing a new feudal structure that strengthened the monarchy. Every major landholder owed direct loyalty to the king, reinforcing centralized government. William proved equally effective as an administrator. In 1085 he ordered an extraordinary nationwide survey of land ownership, population, livestock, and wealth. The resulting Domesday Book became one of medieval Europe’s most remarkable administrative records, providing an accurate assessment for taxation and governance while preserving invaluable historical information. The Norman Conquest also transformed English language and culture. French became the language of the royal court, law, and aristocracy, introducing thousands of new words into English and influencing its evolution for centuries. William died in 1087 after suffering injuries during a military campaign in France, but the institutions he created continued shaping England long after his death. Historians regard him as one of the architects of medieval England, whose conquest fundamentally changed the nation’s political structure, legal traditions, aristocracy, and cultural identity.
