After Zhuge Liang’s death, the balance of power began to shift once again. Within Wei, the Sima clan was becoming increasingly powerful. When Cao Shuang left the capital with Emperor Cao Fang, Sima Yi seized the opportunity to take control of Luoyang’s military and political institutions.
English Version
After Zhuge Liang’s death, the political landscape of the Three Kingdoms entered another period of transformation.
Shu had lost its greatest strategist.
But Wei was facing a different and more dangerous problem.
The struggle for power had moved inside the imperial court.
In Luoyang, Emperor Cao Fang was still young.
The government was effectively dominated by two powerful figures: Cao Shuang and Sima Yi.
They appeared to serve the same court.
In reality, they trusted each other very little.
Sima Yi had spent years remaining cautious and quiet.
Many believed that age and illness had forced him away from the center of power.
Some even assumed that the veteran commander who had once challenged Zhuge Liang was no longer capable of changing the political landscape.
They were wrong.
Sima Yi had been waiting.
One day, Cao Shuang, accompanied by his brothers and several trusted officials, left Luoyang with Emperor Cao Fang to visit the imperial tombs and go hunting.
The capital was suddenly vulnerable.
Sima Yi received the news.
His expression changed.
“The moment has come.”
He immediately activated his network of supporters.
Gao Rou was ordered to assume military authority.
Wang Guan secured control of important troops.
Sima Yi himself moved his forces toward the military arsenal and other strategic positions.
The operation was swift.
Before Cao Shuang fully understood what was happening, key positions throughout Luoyang had already fallen under Sima Yi’s control.
Sima Yi then entered the palace and approached Empress Dowager Guo.
He accused Cao Shuang of betraying the trust of the late emperor and abusing his political authority.
The empress dowager was shocked.
“The emperor is outside the capital. What are we to do?”
Sima Yi calmly replied that he already had a plan.
Soon, the necessary imperial authorization was obtained.
With a single political move, the balance of power inside Wei changed dramatically.
Cao Shuang remained outside the capital.
When he realized what had happened, he discovered that his control over the military was rapidly disappearing.
His advisers urged him to fight.
Others suggested withdrawing toward Xuchang and calling for reinforcements.
But Cao Shuang hesitated.
He had never believed that Sima Yi would actually dare to seize power so decisively.
Worse, Sima Yi had already prepared every major position within Luoyang.
Among the forces supporting Sima Yi was another important figure.
Sima Zhao.
At this stage, Sima Zhao was not yet the ruler he would eventually become.
But he was already participating in the political and military struggle that would shape the future of Wei.
He protected his father.
He commanded troops.
He observed how Sima Yi dealt with dangerous political situations.
The younger generation of the Sima clan had begun to enter the center of history.
Cao Shuang eventually chose to surrender.
He believed that Sima Yi merely wanted military authority restored to himself.
Perhaps, he thought, surrendering would allow him to survive.
That decision proved disastrous.
Sima Yi soon moved against Cao Shuang and his political allies.
Wei had entered a completely new era.
The emperor remained on the throne.
The Wei dynasty still existed.
The Cao family still possessed its titles and imperial lineage.
But real political power was moving elsewhere.
From the Cao family.
Toward the Sima family.
This was what made the situation so dangerous.
A dynasty did not need to disappear overnight.
The emperor could remain alive.
The palace could remain standing.
The banners of Wei could still fly across the land.
Yet if the emperor no longer controlled the government, the dynasty had already begun to lose its substance.
While Wei struggled with this internal transformation, Shu continued its Northern ambitions.
Jiang Wei had inherited Zhuge Liang’s unfinished dream.
He hoped that Wei’s political instability might create an opportunity.
But political turmoil did not automatically guarantee victory on the battlefield.
Jiang Wei advanced toward Mount Niutou.
Wei forces were prepared.
The two armies clashed.
Shu suffered a setback.
Jiang Wei was forced to retreat.
Yet the defeat did not end his determination.
He understood that the Northern Expeditions were no longer merely Zhuge Liang’s dream.
They had become his responsibility.
At the same time, Wei was beginning to face a completely different kind of threat.
Zhuge Liang had spent his life trying to defeat Wei from outside.
Now Wei’s greatest danger was emerging from within.
Sima Yi’s authority was expanding.
Sima Zhao was gaining experience.
The Cao imperial house was losing influence.
Three forces were gradually shaping the future.
Military power.
Political ambition.
Imperial weakness.
Luoyang remained quiet that night.
The palace lamps continued to shine.
The emperor still occupied the throne.
Wei still existed.
But history had already begun to turn.
The Cao family remained the official rulers.
The Sima family was becoming the real power behind the throne.
And the age of the Sima clan was drawing closer.
