動畫角色老了,我們卻以為自己沒有 | Anime Characters Grow Older, But We Think We Haven’t: The Illusion of Time in Animation | 動漫遊 014

2026-03-17

Anime characters seem to age, evolve, and complete their journeys—yet we often feel unchanged as viewers. This contrast reveals a subtle illusion. While stories move forward and characters grow, our own passage of time feels less visible, shaping how we perceive both ourselves and the anime we once loved.

English Version
Anime presents a unique relationship with time, one that often creates the illusion that characters grow while viewers remain the same. In many series, characters undergo visible development—they face challenges, mature emotionally, and reach milestones that signal progress. Their journeys are structured, purposeful, and often finite. In contrast, the viewer’s experience of time is less defined. Life does not unfold in clearly marked arcs, and personal growth can feel gradual or even imperceptible. This difference creates the impression that while anime characters move forward, we remain unchanged. Yet this perception is not entirely accurate. The passage of time affects both the story and the viewer, but in different ways. Anime compresses growth into a narrative framework, allowing change to be seen and understood within a limited timeframe. A character may evolve significantly over the course of a series, making their transformation easy to recognize. For viewers, however, change happens continuously and without clear boundaries. It is not always visible in the moment, which can make it feel as though nothing has changed at all. Series such as Naruto and Attack on Titan highlight this contrast. Their characters age, develop new perspectives, and confront increasingly complex realities. When viewers revisit these stories years later, they often notice aspects that felt insignificant before but now carry deeper meaning. This shift does not come from the anime changing—it comes from the viewer. The story remains the same, but the interpretation evolves, revealing how much the viewer has grown over time. The illusion of remaining unchanged is also reinforced by the nature of memory. People tend to remember themselves as they were at a particular moment, especially when that moment is tied to a meaningful experience such as watching a favorite anime. This creates a fixed image of the self that does not easily update, even as time passes. When returning to an old series, viewers may feel as though they are reconnecting with their past selves, blurring the distinction between who they were and who they have become. The modern media environment adds another layer to this phenomenon. With platforms such as Netflix and Crunchyroll making anime instantly accessible, viewers can revisit stories at any time. This immediacy collapses the sense of distance between past and present, making it easier to overlook the time that has passed. The experience feels continuous, even though it is not. The role of nostalgia is particularly significant. Anime often serves as a bridge between different stages of life, preserving emotions and perspectives from the past. When viewers engage with these stories again, they are not only watching the anime—they are also encountering their own memories. This dual experience can create a sense of timelessness, where the boundaries between past and present blur. However, this does not mean that time has stood still. It means that the connection between memory and story is strong enough to transcend it. Another important aspect is the difference between narrative closure and personal continuity. Anime characters often reach clear conclusions to their arcs, providing a sense of completion. Viewers, on the other hand, continue their journeys beyond the story. There is no definitive ending, no moment where growth is fully realized. This ongoing process makes it harder to perceive change, as there is no clear point of comparison. Despite this, the influence of anime on personal growth should not be underestimated. The values, ideas, and emotions encountered through stories can shape how viewers think and feel, even if these changes are not immediately visible. Over time, these influences accumulate, contributing to a broader sense of identity and understanding. The realization of this growth often comes later, when revisiting a familiar story reveals new insights and perspectives. Ultimately, the idea that anime characters grow older while we do not is an illusion created by the way time is represented in storytelling. In reality, both the characters and the viewers are constantly changing. The difference lies in visibility—anime makes growth explicit, while real life renders it subtle. By recognizing this, viewers can begin to see their own development more clearly, understanding that they, too, have been moving forward all along. In this way, anime becomes not just a reflection of fictional growth, but a mirror of our own.
