After the Battle of Hulao Pass, the coalition briefly gains momentum, but internal divisions quickly surface. The warlords, driven by personal ambition, fail to maintain unity, and the alliance begins to collapse. Meanwhile, Dong Zhuo responds strategically by relocating the capital to Chang’an and ordering the burning of Luoyang. This shocking decision marks a turning point, deepening the chaos and accelerating the fall of the Han Dynasty.

English Version
Although the coalition gains momentum after the Battle of Hulao Pass, its success is short-lived. As the campaign continues, internal divisions become increasingly apparent.
The so-called alliance of eighteen warlords is united in name only. Yuan Shao, the leader, lacks the authority to enforce discipline. Each faction operates independently, making coordinated strategy nearly impossible.
Tensions rise, particularly between Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu. Despite sharing noble origins, they distrust each other and compete for influence. Disputes over supplies and command weaken the coalition’s effectiveness.
Cao Cao repeatedly urges a swift offensive against Dong Zhuo, recognizing the importance of timing. However, his proposals are ignored. Many warlords choose caution, preserving their strength for future ambitions rather than risking losses.
Sun Jian achieves notable success on the front lines, even advancing close to Luoyang. Yet without proper support and amid growing suspicion, his progress stalls.
While the coalition hesitates, Dong Zhuo makes a decisive move.
Realizing that Luoyang cannot be defended, he orders the relocation of the capital to Chang’an. Taking the emperor and officials with him, he ensures his control over the central authority.
Before leaving, he commands the burning of Luoyang.
Flames consume palaces, government buildings, and homes. The once-glorious capital is reduced to ashes, and countless civilians are left homeless. The destruction shocks the entire empire.
When the coalition finally enters Luoyang, they find nothing but ruins. The symbolic heart of the Han Dynasty is gone.
This moment reveals the true nature of Dong Zhuo—not just a tyrant, but a ruthless strategist willing to destroy everything to maintain power.
Despite witnessing this devastation, the coalition fails to recover.
With their objective gone and internal divisions worsening, the warlords begin to withdraw. The alliance collapses, leaving the empire fragmented once again.
What could have been a turning point instead accelerates the fall of the Han Dynasty.
The era of chaos has fully begun.
