Released in 2005 and digitally remastered for a theatrical revival in 2025, the film stars Juri Ueno as Suzume, an unremarkable housewife whose quiet existence unexpectedly changes after she answers an unusual advertisement seeking secret agents. With her husband working overseas, Suzume spends her lonely days caring for her pet turtle and drifting through an uneventful routine. Longing for excitement, she responds to the mysterious recruitment notice expecting a dramatic new life filled with danger and adventure. Instead, the interview takes an unexpected turn. Rather than searching for highly trained operatives, the organization praises Suzume precisely because she is so ordinary that nobody would ever notice her. Her greatest qualification is her complete lack of distinction. After being accepted, her first assignment sounds almost ridiculous: continue living exactly as before without attracting attention. As Suzume embraces her unusual mission, her perception of everyday life begins to change. Familiar streets, neighbors, shopkeepers, and strangers suddenly appear full of hidden mysteries, amusing habits, and unexpected personalities. Ironically, the harder she tries to remain invisible, the more unusual encounters seem to find her.
