Directed by Rikako Watanabe, Heart Pills is an experimental feature that steps away from conventional storytelling and instead builds its emotional landscape through theatre games. Rather than relying on dramatic twists or traditional character arcs, the film observes performers as they engage in guided improvisational exercises designed to reveal genuine emotions hidden beneath everyday behavior. The title refers to the small fabric pills created by friction, using that familiar image as a metaphor for the emotional knots people accumulate through love, misunderstanding, loss, and the passing of time. The central exercise revolves around memories of past relationships, encouraging participants to respond honestly without scripted dialogue. As the sessions continue, actor Matsuda gradually uncovers thoughts and feelings that have remained buried for years. Every conversation, silence, hesitation, and unexpected reaction becomes part of a process of emotional excavation. Instead of explaining every detail of his romantic past, the film focuses on the universal experience of confronting memories that continue to shape the present.
