The World of Hayao Miyazaki: Technology, Civilization, and Human Duality
In Miyazaki’s films, technology is never a simple symbol of progress, it brings both hope and destruction, and within human civilization, creation and loss exist side by side.

English Version
Miyazaki’s portrayal of technology is consistently marked by tension, as he neither rejects human creativity nor ignores its consequences, in Castle in the Sky Laputa represents a civilization that has reached extraordinary heights, combining advanced technology with architectural beauty, yet within this achievement lies immense destructive potential, and when humans attempt to reclaim that power, they repeat the same patterns that led to its downfall, in Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind the world has already experienced the aftermath of technological excess, the toxic jungle stands as a response to a past shaped by human ambition and loss of control, suggesting that nature itself becomes a corrective force, in The Wind Rises technology takes on a more personal dimension, as Jiro’s passion for designing aircraft is driven by admiration for flight and aesthetic beauty, yet his creations are ultimately used in war, transforming his dream into something conflicted and ethically complex, through these narratives Miyazaki examines the relationship between technology and civilization without reducing it to a simple moral judgment, technology in itself carries no intention, its direction is determined by those who wield it, and this makes the issue deeply intertwined with human nature, as individuals are capable of both creation and destruction, driven by curiosity, ambition, but also by desire and power, this duality shapes the trajectory of civilization, allowing it to produce both progress and harm, Miyazaki does not offer a solution to this contradiction, instead he presents it as an ongoing condition, encouraging reflection on the choices embedded within every act of creation, what matters in his work is not the existence of technology but the awareness of its consequences, whether individuals are willing to confront the impact of what they build, and whether they can navigate the fragile balance between innovation and responsibility, this balance is neither stable nor easily maintained, requiring continuous awareness and adjustment, Miyazaki’s perspective on civilization is therefore neither purely pessimistic nor blindly optimistic, but one of cautious hope, acknowledging both the beauty and the shadow of human achievement, and it is this coexistence that gives his stories their enduring depth and resonance.
