Martin Luther was the central figure of the 16th-century Protestant Reformation and is often regarded as the father of Protestantism. In 1517, he challenged the Catholic Church by publishing the Ninety-Five Theses, criticizing the sale of indulgences. He emphasized justification by faith and the direct relationship between individuals and God. By translating the Bible into German, Luther made religious texts accessible to the common people, reshaping both religion and European society.
English Version
Martin Luther stands as one of the most influential figures in European history, whose actions sparked a profound transformation in religion, society, and politics.
Born in 1483 in Germany, Luther was initially trained in law, following his father’s wishes. However, a life-changing experience during a thunderstorm led him to become a monk in the Augustinian order.
During his monastic life, Luther struggled deeply with the question of salvation. Through his study of the Bible, he developed the belief that salvation comes not through good works or church rituals, but through faith alone—justification by faith.
In 1517, Luther openly challenged the practice of selling indulgences by publishing the Ninety-Five Theses. According to tradition, he nailed them to the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church. This act quickly spread across Europe and marked the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.
His ideas directly challenged the authority of the Catholic Church, leading to his excommunication and declaration as a heretic. Despite this, his writings spread rapidly thanks to the printing press.
While in hiding at Wartburg Castle, Luther translated the Bible into German. This made the scriptures accessible to ordinary people and had a lasting impact on the German language.
The Reformation soon spread across Europe, giving rise to various Protestant denominations and triggering significant religious and political conflicts.
Luther’s core principles—Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, and Sola Gratia—redefined the role of religious authority and emphasized personal faith.
Although Luther remains a controversial figure due to some of his later writings, his historical impact is undeniable. His actions not only transformed Christianity but also contributed to the development of education, literacy, and modern nation-states.
Martin Luther was more than a religious reformer—he was a revolutionary thinker who reshaped the course of Western civilization.
