Adapted Storiesdream of the red chamber

Chapter 71|Pavilions in the Mist: Memories Waiting Beyond the Horizon

2026-07-04

Some memories never fade with distance. Like distant pavilions hidden within misty rain, they remain quietly visible across the years. When the heart finally releases its burdens, it discovers that the people and moments once treasured have never truly disappeared.

English Version
A gentle summer rain settled quietly over the ancient garden, wrapping the pavilions, bridges, and distant towers in a veil of drifting mist. Soft ripples spread across the lake while the outlines of old buildings appeared and disappeared through the rain, as though the entire world had become a living ink painting. Standing beneath the covered corridor, Baoyu gazed toward the blurred pavilion in the distance, and memories long hidden beneath the years slowly resurfaced. He remembered rainy afternoons spent walking beside someone beneath a single umbrella, silent conversations that needed no words, and moments when understanding flowed naturally between two hearts. Once he believed memories would eventually disappear with time. Now he understood that the moments which truly mattered never faded at all. They simply rested quietly within the soul, waiting for a familiar sound, a gentle rain, or a passing breeze to awaken them once more. Raindrops touched the lake and rested lightly upon his shoulders, yet instead of bringing coldness, they filled him with unexpected peace. Memory, he realized, was never a burden. It was a bridge connecting who he had been with who he had become, allowing those who had walked beside him to remain present in quiet and invisible ways. Across the garden, Daiyu stood beside the open window of a quiet pavilion, watching the rain soften the distant landscape until earth and sky blended together. Looking through the mist, she understood that longing is not created by an inability to let go, but by the light others leave within our lives. She remembered spring afternoons spent among blossoming flowers, peaceful evenings beneath countless stars, and small gestures of kindness hidden inside ordinary days. Every one of those moments returned with the falling rain, yet they brought gratitude instead of sorrow. Without those encounters, she thought, she would never have learned how precious simple happiness could be. The rain grew lighter as bamboo leaves swayed gently beside the pavilion, filling the air with quiet whispers. Though separated by distance, both Baoyu and Daiyu found themselves looking toward the same mist-covered tower. It stood like a silent monument to time itself, linking yesterday with today. Neither needed another conversation, because what truly mattered had already moved beyond words, beyond distance, and beyond time. Baoyu suddenly realized that life is not simply about moving forward without pause. It is also about looking back with gratitude toward the people who quietly shaped our hearts. Every meeting may eventually reach its conclusion, yet genuine companionship never truly ends. It becomes a quiet light inside memory, guiding us through uncertainty and warming us during lonely seasons. Closing her window gently, Daiyu listened to the rain falling from the roof and felt an unfamiliar sense of peace. She understood that the distant places people long for are not always measured by geography. Often they exist within the heart, where cherished people and beautiful seasons remain forever unchanged. Even if life could never return to the past, those shared years had already become the brightest part of her journey. Fate itself resembled the gentle rain, arriving softly and disappearing without notice, while memory remained like the pavilion hidden within mist, standing patiently across the years, waiting for another quiet moment when heart and remembrance would meet once again.
