Heaven help me—I once believed kindness was a permanent part of who I was. Looking back now, I know how easily the human heart can surrender to darkness. Day after day, alcohol coursed through my veins like poison, feeding something cruel that had always been waiting beneath the surface. The man who had once cherished every living creature slowly disappeared, leaving behind someone ruled by bitterness, suspicion, and rage.
Our home no longer felt warm.
The rooms that had once echoed with birdsong and laughter grew silent beneath an invisible weight. Even the sunlight seemed dimmer, as though the house itself sensed the corruption spreading inside me.
Mary tried desperately to preserve the peace.
She greeted me with gentle words, offered quiet comfort, and forgave more than any person ever should. Yet every act of kindness only fueled my resentment. Her concern felt like pity. Her patience became an accusation. I could no longer bear the sight of compassion because it reminded me of everything I had lost.
The animals suffered most.
Our old dog, whose legs had grown weak with age, became an easy target for my temper. A careless kick would send him stumbling across the floor, too frightened even to cry out. The canaries burst into frantic panic whenever I raised my voice, their wings beating helplessly against the bars of their cage. One by one, the innocent creatures that had once filled my life with joy became victims of my cruelty.
To my everlasting shame…
I found satisfaction in their fear.
Watching them tremble awakened something twisted inside me, something that delighted in power instead of kindness. Every act of violence seemed to erase another piece of the man I used to be.
Only Pluto remained beyond my reach.
Whenever I looked into his brilliant yellow-green eyes or ran my hand across his sleek black fur, forgotten memories returned for a fleeting moment. I remembered the lonely shelter where we first met. I remembered his quiet trust. I remembered the evenings when he followed me faithfully through every room of the house.
Those memories still possessed enough strength to restrain my hand.
For a while.
Yet Pluto had changed as well.
Ever since that stormy night when I returned home drunk, he no longer greeted me at the door. The silent companion who had followed me like a shadow seemed to have vanished forever.
Animals possess instincts beyond human understanding.
Somehow, Pluto sensed the decay spreading through my soul long before I could admit it myself.
Whenever I entered a room, he quietly slipped beneath the sofa or disappeared behind a cabinet. Sometimes I caught sight of his glowing eyes watching me from the darkness, cautious, distant, always ready to flee.
He no longer trusted me.
At first, that realization wounded me more deeply than I cared to admit.
I called his name in the same gentle voice I had once used.
“Pluto…”
I brought him fresh food.
I crouched beside his hiding place with an outstretched hand, hoping he would remember the man who had loved him.
But he never moved.
His body remained tense, his eyes fixed upon me, measuring every movement as though I were a stranger—or worse, a predator.
The rejection stung.
Each failed attempt carved another wound into my pride.
Had reason still guided me, I might have understood.
Fear—not betrayal—kept him away.
But reason had abandoned me long ago.
Alcohol transformed disappointment into resentment, and resentment into hatred.
Before long, I convinced myself that Pluto’s silence concealed mockery.
His cautious distance became an insult.
Those pale yellow-green eyes, gleaming from the darkness, seemed to laugh at me without making a sound.
He knows.
That poisonous thought echoed endlessly inside my head.
He knows what I’ve become.
Every glance from the shadows felt like judgment.
Every retreat felt deliberate.
Every moment of avoidance became another unbearable humiliation.
Mary noticed the growing tension almost immediately.
One evening, after watching Pluto slip beneath the furniture again, she spoke with quiet sadness.
“He’s afraid of you.”
Nothing more.
Just four simple words.
Yet they struck me harder than any blow.
Afraid… of me.
Not because he was stubborn.
Not because he misunderstood me.
Because I had become someone worth fearing.
The truth pierced whatever remained of my pride.
Without warning, I seized the teacup resting beside me and hurled it against the wall. Porcelain exploded across the room.
“Enough!” I roared.
“Don’t say another word!”
Mary stepped back in frightened silence.
No one spoke again that evening.
From that moment forward, the final thread holding my conscience together snapped.
The guilt I once carried whenever Pluto looked at me slowly disappeared, replaced by something far more dangerous.
Obsession.
I spent longer hours inside filthy taverns, drowning every remaining fragment of reason beneath endless glasses of liquor. Night after night, I staggered home long after midnight, scarcely able to stand.
Yet no matter how drunk I became…
I searched for him.
My bloodshot eyes wandered through every dark corner of the house.
Behind the curtains.
Beneath the staircase.
Under the tables.
Inside every shadow where Pluto might be hiding.
I no longer searched because I missed him.
I searched because something terrible had begun to grow inside me.
The demon that alcohol had awakened whispered constantly within my thoughts.
It was patient.
It was hungry.
And somewhere in the darkness, it waited…
…for the single moment when I would finally surrender to it completely.
