Written and directed by Tomofumi Hasegawa, Imaginary Book Covers is a two-part feature that explores the relationship between storytelling, memory, literature, and reality through a pair of imaginative yet interconnected narratives. Blending fantasy, mystery, and subtle satire, the film examines how fictional stories continue to shape human identity even in an increasingly uncertain world. The first episode, The Story of the Bookshelf, follows Kenichiro, a student council president with little interest in reading. His routine life changes when he encounters Tsumugi, a mysterious girl who claims to have traveled from a future where books have been completely outlawed. Although he initially dismisses her claims as fantasy, strange discoveries soon begin to challenge his skepticism. School records contain no trace of Tsumugi’s existence, while the school librarian appears to be secretly helping her remove books from the library. As Kenichiro investigates further, he begins questioning what humanity would lose if literature were erased from history altogether. The second episode, Going to Bury It, shifts into darker territory with a cynical exploration of authorship and literary fame. After the sudden death of celebrated novelist Oniyama, his editor Shuta rushes to the writer’s studio and unexpectedly rescues Mari, a young woman who had been imprisoned there. Determined to conceal the novelist’s death, Mari insists on burying the body somewhere it can never be discovered. Their unsettling journey gradually uncovers hidden truths surrounding Oniyama’s career, revealing uncomfortable questions about ghostwriting, artistic ownership, and the price of literary success. While the two stories differ greatly in tone, both revolve around the enduring influence of stories and the blurred line separating fiction from reality. Director Tomofumi Hasegawa employs understated pacing, symbolic imagery, and thoughtful dialogue to encourage audiences to interpret the film’s deeper meanings for themselves. Actress Sakura Minehira appears in both episodes, portraying the enigmatic Tsumugi in the first story and the mysterious Mari in the second, creating an invisible thread that connects the film’s contrasting narratives.
