In Shan Hai Jing, Mount Kunlun is far more than a geographical feature; it is imagined as the sacred center of the cosmos, a place where heaven and earth intersect and where divine order originates, reflecting an ancient worldview in which the world is not an evenly distributed space but one that radiates outward from a central, meaningful point, and within this framework, Mount Kunlun serves as the axis that stabilizes and organizes existence, making it both a physical and symbolic anchor in the mythological landscape. The text describes Kunlun as a towering mountain reaching toward the heavens, adorned with palaces and inhabited by powerful deities, most notably the Queen Mother of the West, a figure associated with immortality and cosmic authority, whose presence reinforces the mountain’s role as a site of divine governance and eternal life, while the surrounding environment is populated with luminous minerals, sacred trees, and mythical creatures that guard and define this extraordinary realm, transforming it into a space that transcends ordinary reality and approaches an idealized vision of harmony and power. From a symbolic perspective, Mount Kunlun can be understood as an “axis mundi,” a concept found in many cultures where a central point connects different layers of the universe, and in this sense, it functions as both a spiritual and spatial reference from which all other regions are understood, revealing a deep human need to impose order on the unknown by anchoring the world around a fixed center, especially in a time when geographic knowledge was limited and fragmented. Some scholars have suggested that the myth of Kunlun may have been inspired by distant knowledge of real mountain ranges in Central Asia, such as the Kunlun Mountains, which were only vaguely understood by early Chinese observers, and through processes of storytelling and symbolic interpretation, these distant landscapes were transformed into a mythological center imbued with supernatural significance, illustrating how Shan Hai Jing merges empirical fragments with imaginative expansion to construct its worldview. Over time, the image of Mount Kunlun became deeply embedded in Chinese cultural and religious thought, appearing in Daoist traditions, literature, and art as a symbol of transcendence, perfection, and the ultimate source of order, and thus, when we encounter Kunlun in Shan Hai Jing, we are not simply reading about a mountain but engaging with an ancient conceptualization of the world’s center, where the boundaries between the human and the divine dissolve, and from which the structure of the cosmos is imagined to unfold.
