English Version
On August 26, 1910, Mother Teresa, born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, was born in Skopje, then part of the Ottoman Empire and now the capital of North Macedonia. She dedicated her life to humanitarian aid and selfless service, founding the Missionaries of Charity to care for the poor, sick, and helpless, becoming an enduring global symbol of charity and compassion. Raised in a devout Catholic family, she felt a religious calling at age twelve, deciding to commit her life to spiritual service. At eighteen, she left home to join the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland and was soon sent to teach at St. Mary’s School in Kolkata, India. Her years in India exposed her to extreme poverty and suffering in the city slums, fundamentally reshaping her life’s direction. In 1946, during a train journey to Darjeeling, she experienced what she called her “call within a call,” prompting her to leave the comfort of teaching to serve the poorest of the poor directly in Kolkata’s streets. In 1950, receiving official authorization from the Vatican, she established the Missionaries of Charity. Wearing simple blue-bordered white saris, the sisters provided healthcare, food, and human dignity to terminally ill patients, leprosy sufferers, orphans, and the homeless. Her first hospice, Nirmal Hriday (“Home for the Dying Destitute”), offered comfort and respect to dying street dwellers in their final moments. Over time, her charitable network expanded to hundreds of countries, establishing orphanages, clinics, and shelters globally. In recognition of her extraordinary humanitarian work, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, famously requesting that the customary ceremonial banquet be canceled and its funds redirected to aid the needy. Following her passing in 1997, she was canonized as a saint by the Vatican in 2016. Her remarkable life stands as an inspiring testament to altruism and unconditional empathy.
