The Vengeful Yazi of the Classic of Mountains and Seas

2026-05-31

Yazi is a fierce mythical beast deeply rooted in ancient Chinese legend, often regarded as one of the dragon’s offspring. Associated with wrath, vengeance, and relentless combat, the creature became a symbol of ferocity and warrior spirit within the fantastical world of the Classic of Mountains and Seas.

English Version

Beyond the desolate mountains where crimson sunsets stain the horizon, ancient legends speak of a terrifying creature watching silently from the shadows. Its roar echoes through barren valleys like distant thunder, striking fear into every living thing nearby. This beast is known as Yazi, a dragon-born creature feared for its endless rage and unyielding thirst for vengeance.

In the mythological world of the Classic of Mountains and Seas, Yazi was described as a savage guardian of wrath and warfare. Its body combined the form of a dragon with the brutality of a predatory beast. Black scales covered its muscular frame while blazing crimson eyes burned with fury that never faded. Sharp fangs and claws capable of tearing stone made the creature a terrifying symbol of destruction. Ancient people believed that once Yazi fixed its hatred upon someone, it would pursue revenge without mercy or forgetfulness.

Unlike benevolent mythical guardians, Yazi represented the darker side of power. Warriors and generals admired the beast because it embodied fearlessness in battle. Ancient weapons were often decorated with snarling dragon-beast carvings inspired by Yazi, especially sword hilts and ceremonial blades. Soldiers believed these images could grant courage, intimidate enemies, and awaken the savage determination needed to survive war.

Legends tell of a cursed canyon hidden deep within ancient wastelands where Yazi was said to dwell alone. The land surrounding the ravine remained barren, scarred by storms and endless shadows. Claw marks etched into stone cliffs were believed to be traces left behind by the beast itself. Some ancient mystics claimed Yazi was not merely a monster, but a living manifestation of humanity’s oldest emotions—rage, vengeance, and hatred carried through generations of conflict.

One famous tale describes a young warrior seeking revenge for the destruction of his family. Determined to gain the power necessary for vengeance, he journeyed alone across storms and wastelands until he reached the canyon of Yazi. At midnight he finally saw the beast standing upon a cliff, its eyes glowing like embers within darkness. Rather than flee, the warrior confessed every ounce of hatred and grief within his heart. The creature listened in silence before releasing a roar so powerful it shook the mountains themselves. Then Yazi left behind a single black scale stained like dried blood, accepting the warrior’s resolve.

After returning to civilization, the warrior became unstoppable in battle. No enemy could defeat him, and his quest for revenge succeeded beyond all expectation. Yet the power came at a terrible cost. Consumed by fury, he gradually lost compassion, peace, and even his sense of humanity. In the end, though vengeance was achieved, the darkness within him remained forever. Through stories like these, ancient people came to view Yazi as both a source of strength and a warning about the destructive nature of hatred.

Because of this symbolism, Yazi held a unique place within Chinese culture. It was respected not only as a fearsome beast but also as a reflection of inner human conflict. Its image reminded people that anger can create great power, yet unchecked vengeance may ultimately consume the soul itself.

Even today, Yazi continues to appear throughout fantasy literature, films, games, and artwork inspired by ancient mythology. Its burning gaze, armored scales, and relentless spirit remain iconic symbols of fury and battle. Across centuries of storytelling, the beast still stands within the imagination as a dark guardian of wrath—watching silently from forgotten mountains where echoes of ancient rage never truly fade.
