April 6, 1896:
The first modern Olympic Games officially opened in Athens, marking the revival of one of the world’s oldest sporting traditions.
The event was organized largely through the efforts of Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator who believed that international sports competitions could promote peace and understanding among nations. The Games were held at the historic Panathenaic Stadium and featured around 240 athletes from 14 countries.
Competitions included athletics, gymnastics, swimming, shooting, and more. Although relatively small in scale compared to modern standards, the structure of the event closely resembled that of today’s Olympic Games. Notably, women were not allowed to compete, reflecting the social norms of the time.
The success of the 1896 Games laid the foundation for the modern Olympic movement, establishing the tradition of holding the Games every four years. Over time, the Olympics have grown into one of the largest and most influential global sporting events.
Today, the Olympic Games symbolize unity, excellence, and international cooperation, continuing the vision that began in Athens over a century ago.
