English Version
On April 27, 1994, South Africa held its first multiracial national election, marking the official end of decades of apartheid. Millions of citizens who had previously been denied the right to vote participated for the first time, creating powerful scenes of long queues at polling stations across the country. The African National Congress (ANC), led by Nelson Mandela, won the election, and Mandela was later sworn in as the nation’s first Black president. Having spent 27 years in prison for opposing apartheid, Mandela emerged as a symbol of resilience, reconciliation, and leadership. Rather than seeking revenge, he promoted unity and peaceful transition, helping to prevent widespread conflict during a critical moment in the country’s history. The election represented more than a political shift; it signified a profound transformation in social values and national identity. The new government focused on building democratic institutions, protecting human rights, and addressing inequality. This historic event became a global symbol of justice and peaceful change, demonstrating that even deeply divided societies can move toward reconciliation and progress.
