English Article Version
On March 4, 1351, King Uthong, also known as Ramathibodi I, established the Ayutthaya Kingdom in what is now Thailand.
Founded along the Chao Phraya River basin, Ayutthaya was strategically positioned for trade and defense. Its location allowed it to become a major commercial hub connecting China, India, and later European merchants.
Under King Uthong’s leadership, Ayutthaya quickly grew into a powerful and influential kingdom in Southeast Asia. Over the next four centuries, it developed a sophisticated political system, vibrant culture, and strong diplomatic relations.
At its height, Ayutthaya was one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the world, known for its grand temples and international trade networks.
The kingdom lasted until 1767, when it fell to Burmese forces — but its legacy remains central to Thai history and identity.
