松本零士宇宙系列：銀河鐵道999與宇宙海盜的浪漫傳說｜Leiji Matsumoto’s Space Saga: Galaxy Express 999 and the Romance of the Cosmos | 動漫遊 035
Leiji Matsumoto created a cosmic romantic universe, from Galaxy Express 999 to space pirates, exploring humanity and eternity.
English Version
When discussing cosmic romanticism in Japanese animation, one cannot overlook Leiji Matsumoto, a creator whose works transformed outer space into a poetic realm of solitude, time, and existential reflection rather than merely a stage for technology and battleships; in his universe, the stars symbolize both infinite freedom and quiet melancholy, while his characters wander through the cosmos in search of meaning and identity, one of his most iconic works, Galaxy Express 999, follows a young boy, Tetsuro Hoshino, who boards a galactic train in pursuit of a mechanical body, traveling alongside the enigmatic Maetel, and as they journey across planets, each stop becomes a self-contained allegory exploring civilization, mortality, and the ethical boundaries of technology, establishing Matsumoto’s signature episodic journey narrative, meanwhile, Space Pirate Captain Harlock presents a contrasting yet equally compelling figure, Captain Harlock, a lone and rebellious space pirate who defies a corrupted Earth government and sails through space aboard the Arcadia, embodying freedom, resistance, and tragic romanticism, a character archetype that would influence generations of storytelling in animation and beyond, another cornerstone is Space Battleship Yamato, produced by Yoshinobu Nishizaki but deeply infused with Matsumoto’s artistic identity, depicting humanity’s desperate interstellar voyage to save Earth, blending war, sacrifice, and hope into an epic narrative, what defines Matsumoto’s “romantic universe” is his ability to humanize the vast emptiness of space, turning it into a reflective stage where wounded yet determined characters continue to move forward toward the stars, his works carry a distinct Showa-era sensibility, emphasizing atmosphere, introspection, and emotional depth over speed and spectacle, his pacing is deliberate and contemplative, allowing audiences to feel the weight of time and existence drifting across the galaxy, visually, his style is unmistakable, characterized by elongated human forms, dramatic facial shading, and intricately detailed mechanical designs that merge nostalgia with futuristic imagination, from the 1970s onward, Matsumoto’s universe has left a profound mark not only on Japanese animation but also on global science fiction culture, his stories are not merely about space adventures but about the poetic search for what it means to be human, and that is why, even today, the image of a train crossing the stars or a solitary pirate ship sailing through the void continues to resonate, shining as a timeless legend of cosmic romance
