Data Privacy Day is observed every year on January 28 to promote awareness of personal data protection, digital privacy, and cybersecurity. The date commemorates the opening for signature of Convention 108 on January 28, 1981, adopted by the Council of Europe as the world’s first legally binding international treaty dedicated to protecting individuals with regard to the automated processing of personal data. To recognize the significance of this milestone, the Council of Europe launched Data Protection Day in 2007, and the initiative was later embraced by countries including the United States and Canada, where it became widely known as Data Privacy Day. Today, the observance has evolved into a global awareness campaign encouraging responsible digital behavior among individuals, businesses, educational institutions, and governments. Modern society relies heavily on digital technologies. Smartphones, online banking, cloud computing, social media, wearable devices, and e-commerce platforms collect vast amounts of personal information every day. Names, addresses, financial records, photographs, health information, browsing histories, and location data have become valuable digital assets. While these technologies improve convenience and efficiency, they also create risks such as identity theft, financial fraud, cybercrime, unauthorized surveillance, and data breaches. Data Privacy Day encourages people to adopt safer online habits.
