Before the 1960s, accessing cash was entirely dependent on bank opening hours. Customers had to visit a teller during the day, and once the bank closed, there was no way to withdraw money until it reopened. As economies expanded and people’s lifestyles became increasingly fast-paced, banks began searching for ways to provide more convenient services beyond traditional business hours.

That breakthrough arrived on June 27, 1967, when the world’s first Automated Teller Machine was installed at a Barclays branch in Enfield, London. The idea was developed by British inventor John Shepherd-Barron, who imagined a machine that could dispense money just as vending machines dispensed snacks. His concept promised a new level of convenience for bank customers.

The earliest ATM looked very different from modern machines. Plastic debit cards had not yet become standard, so customers used specially issued paper vouchers together with a personal identification number to access a limited amount of cash. Although its functions were basic, the innovation represented a revolutionary step in banking technology.

Many people were initially skeptical. Questions about security, reliability, and trust in machines were common. However, as more customers successfully used the service, confidence grew rapidly. Banks soon recognized that automated cash machines could improve customer satisfaction while reducing pressure on branch staff.
