Iroha is a Japanese road movie set against the landscapes of Nagasaki. Through the journey of two sisters traveling across the region in search of the possible father of an unborn child, the film quietly explores loneliness, emotional vulnerability, family bonds, and the desire to be loved. Combining gentle realism with emotional intimacy, the movie transforms a seemingly unusual road trip into a deeply human story about self-discovery and sisterhood.
English Version
Iroha follows 22-year-old Iroha, a quiet and introverted young woman helping her family run a tea shop in her hometown in Nagasaki. Although she continues her daily routine without complaint, she feels trapped in an uncertain future and quietly dissatisfied with the person she has become. She lacks confidence, avoids emotional risk, and remains emotionally suspended between youth and adulthood. Her stagnant life changes suddenly when her older sister Karen unexpectedly returns home after five years away. Unlike Iroha, Karen has always lived impulsively and passionately. Openly emotional and driven by romance, she constantly throws herself into relationships and dramatic life choices. This time, however, Karen arrives carrying a serious problem: she is pregnant but does not know who the father is. The possible candidates include a wealthy heir, an older man with abusive tendencies, and an indebted former boyfriend. Almost by force, Karen drags Iroha into a road trip across Nagasaki to search for the truth. As the sisters travel through coastal towns, rural roads, and quiet city streets, the movie gradually shifts focus away from the mystery of the father’s identity and toward the emotional wounds hidden within both women. Iroha initially believes Karen lives freely and fearlessly, but the journey slowly reveals the loneliness and emotional desperation beneath her sister’s reckless romances. Karen’s constant pursuit of love is ultimately driven by an overwhelming need for recognition, intimacy, and reassurance that she matters to someone. Her emotional vulnerability transforms her from a chaotic figure into a deeply human and fragile character. At the same time, Iroha begins confronting uncomfortable truths about herself. While she once considered herself more rational and stable than Karen, she gradually realizes she has simply avoided emotional pain by refusing to fully engage with life or romance. By staying emotionally distant, she has protected herself from heartbreak but also trapped herself in emotional emptiness. Traveling alongside her sister forces her to ask what she is truly afraid of. The contrast between the two sisters forms the emotional center of the film. One constantly seeks love despite repeated emotional damage, while the other avoids risk entirely and remains emotionally frozen. Through this contrast, the movie explores two different responses to loneliness and vulnerability. Nagasaki itself becomes an essential emotional presence within the story. Director Hatsuki Yokoo, who has repeatedly used Nagasaki as the setting for his films, captures the city’s harbors, hills, and quiet streets with warmth and melancholy. The landscapes mirror the emotional state of the characters, creating an atmosphere where sadness and comfort coexist. The road trip structure allows buried feelings to surface gradually through shared conversations, silence, and movement. 川島鈴遥 gives a restrained and emotionally sensitive performance as Iroha, while 森田想 portrays Karen with a convincing mixture of confidence, insecurity, recklessness, and emotional hunger. Their chemistry captures the realism of sisterhood — filled with arguments, teasing, resentment, dependence, and unspoken affection. Iroha ultimately becomes more than a road movie or family drama. It is a deeply human story about women learning how to face loneliness, emotional vulnerability, and the fear of rejection. Through the sisters’ journey, the film gently suggests that people do not need to be perfect in order to deserve love and connection.
