The Darwin Incident, based on the manga by Shun Umezawa, presents a world that appears familiar on the surface yet is quietly unraveling beneath its foundations. At the center of the story is a being known as a “Humanzee,” a hybrid of human and chimpanzee, engineered through scientific intervention. This existence challenges long-standing assumptions about evolution, identity, and the hierarchy between species. Raised within a human family, the protagonist attempts to live an ordinary life, attending school and forming relationships, but his presence inevitably draws attention. He is both a curiosity and a threat, admired for his intelligence yet feared for what he represents. The narrative expands beyond his personal journey to examine broader societal tensions, particularly the rise of radical movements advocating for animal liberation. One such group seeks to dismantle the human-centered worldview, using the protagonist as a symbolic figure to argue that the distinction between species is artificial. However, their methods grow increasingly extreme, blurring the line between activism and violence. As different factions attempt to claim or control him, the protagonist is forced into a position where neutrality is no longer possible.
