Dream of the Red Chamber Chapter 38: Chrysanthemum Fragrance Fills the Garden—A Poetry Gathering Transformed
After emotion has deepened and extended outward, reunion is never the same. In Chapter 38 of Dream of the Red Chamber, a poetry gathering returns amid the fragrance of chrysanthemums. Though the setting feels familiar, each participant brings a changed inner world, subtly transforming the meaning of the shared moment.
English Version
When people gather again, they do not return as they were.
In Chapter 38, the garden fills with fragrance. Chrysanthemums bloom in quiet abundance, and the space once again becomes a place for poetry, for exchange, for shared presence.
It feels familiar.
But it is not the same.
Because what has changed is not the setting—
it is the people within it.
Each arrives carrying something unseen.
Something formed in silence,
in distance,
in thought.
The poetry begins, as before.
Words are spoken.
Ideas are shared.
Beauty is created.
Yet beneath it all, something deeper moves.
Baoyu participates with warmth, drawn to the moment as it unfolds.
Daiyu perceives the difference.
She understands that repetition does not restore the past.
It reveals change.
Because when inner worlds shift,
even the most familiar gathering
becomes something new.
